The world is brimming with beautiful cities, from ancient urban centres to ultra-modern metropolises. Each one has its own alluring icons: the grand architecture of Florence, the labyrinthine medinas of Marrakesh, the ornate temples of Chiang Mai, the soaring skyscrapers of Abu Dhabi and the coastal romance of Cartagena, just for a start.

We’ve selected a few of the most beautiful cities in the world to help inspire your next adventure. To narrow down the list, we’ve focused primarily on larger cities, limited ourselves to just three spots in each region of the globe and aimed to showcase a broad range of destinations with diverse appeal – after all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

The most beautiful cities in Europe

    Florence, Italy

It’s nearly impossible to choose just one of the most beautiful cities in Italy, but Florence makes a strong case. Around every corner you’ll find remnants of the Italian Renaissance, from Michelangelo’s David to the iconic works of art housed in the Uffizi Gallery. The city’s centerpiece is the stunning Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral, with its marvellous dome and multicoloured marble exterior.

    Seville, Spain

The Andalusian capital of Seville is definitely among the most beautiful places in Spain, with an abundance of historic architecture imbued with Moorish, Jewish and Catholic influences. Although it’s relatively new (only about a century old), the Plaza de España is an essential stop thanks to its picturesque fountain, bridges, archways and tiled murals representing different Spanish provinces.

    Istanbul, Turkey

The most beautiful cities in Europe certainly aren’t limited to the western side of the continent, and Istanbul is the perfect proof. In fact, the capital of Turkey is located right on the border between Europe and Asia, creating a cultural duality that lends it an incredibly unique aesthetic. Don’t miss the architectural wonders of the Hagia Sophia, Blue Mosque and Topkapi Palace.

The most beautiful cities in Africa

    Cape Town, South Africa

Framed by the emblematic plateau of Table Mountain and the azure waves of two different oceans, Cape Town is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful cities in Africa. The legislative capital of South Africa is full of fascinating history, spectacular views, natural beauty and cultural experiences, making it a wonderfully well-rounded destination for every type of traveller.

    Zanzibar City, Tanzania

The capital city of Zanzibar is primarily known for its historic centre, Stone Town, which is a hub of multicultural heritage. Once a significant part of the spice trade, the city is replete with coral stone buildings and ornate wooden doors. The surrounding landscapes are equally gorgeous: think tropical turquoise waters, white sand beaches and graceful palm trees.

    Marrakesh, Morocco

Marrakesh is a feast for the senses, from its narrow alleyways and bountiful markets to the sweeping square of Jemaa el-Fnaa. Its most impressive sites include the 16th-century Ben Youssef Madrasa, with its complex carvings and tiled courtyards, and the paradisiacal Jardin Majorelle, a lush botanical garden with a jewel-toned villa that once housed Yves Saint Laurent.

The most beautiful cities in Latin America

    Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Rio de Janeiro is packed with picture-perfect scenery and legendary landmarks. Here you can take a scenic cable car to Sugarloaf Mountain, hike up Corcovado to see Christ the Redeemer or enjoy the famous beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema. In addition to being among the most beautiful cities in Latin America, Rio is also home to one of our favourite historic hotels: the Copacabana Palace.

    Buenos Aires, Argentina

Perhaps the grandest of all of South America’s capitals, Buenos Aires is a magical metropolis on the shores of the Río de la Plata. Its prettiest neighbourhoods include elegant Recoleta, trendy Palermo and lively San Telmo, as well as the rainbow-hued houses of Caminito. Between all the sightseeing, make sure to enjoy some of the incredible cuisine that’s made the city a culinary mecca.

    Cartagena, Colombia

Pastel-painted buildings, flower-filled balconies, colonial fortresses and a constant sea breeze: these are the hallmarks of Cartagena, one of Colombia’s most beautiful coastal cities. A delightfully walkable and welcoming city, it’s an ideal destination for anyone looking to combine historical insights with a sultry Caribbean island atmosphere. The nearby Islas del Rosario make for a fantastic day trip, too.

The most beautiful cities in Asia

    Kyoto, Japan

Widely considered one of the most beautiful cities in Asia, Kyoto represents the intersection of Japan’s past and present. It’s replete with gorgeous gardens, authentic ryokans and ancient structures that survived the devastation of World War II. Highlights include the Buddhist temple of Kinkaku-ji (also known as the Golden Pavilion) and no fewer than 16 other UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

    Chiang Mai, Thailand

The whole of Thailand is bursting with beauty, but Chiang Mai is particularly picturesque. Situated in the northern highlands, it boasts hundreds of temples and is surrounded by idyllic mountains and jungles. The atmosphere here is serene, considering the fact that it’s the country’s second-largest city. Once the sun sets, its famous night bazaar comes alive with street food stalls and vendors selling artisanal crafts.

    Hội An, Vietnam

Hội An is one of the smallest cities on this list, and its pedestrianised historic centre makes it feel more like a small town. During the day you can admire architecture that reflects influences from Japan, China and France; at night you can stroll through streets illuminated by pretty paper lanterns. Once a month, the city celebrates the full moon with floating lanterns and other Vietnamese cultural traditions.

The most beautiful cities in the Middle East

    Cairo, Egypt

Probably best known for its legendary backdrop – the Pyramids and Great Sphinx of Giza – Cairo is a vibrant city where ancient culture melds with modernity. Here you’ll find a seemingly endless array of awe-inspiring mosques and intriguing museums, along with sleek skyscrapers and an incredible culinary scene – all of it set along the banks of the meandering Nile River.

    Muscat, Oman

Muscat is a port city with a sublime setting, framed by volcanic landscapes and deserts on one side and the glittering Gulf of Oman on the other. Its whitewashed buildings, domed mosques and intricate souks lend it an air of enchantment and distinctive beauty. Old Muscat is especially alluring, with its 500-year-old walls, colonial Portuguese forts and strikingly modern Sultan’s Palace.

    Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates and – in our opinion – its prettiest city. It seamlessly blends the country’s disparate draws: futuristic architecture, traditional culture and natural beauty. Spread across more than 200 islands, the city offers attractions for every interest, from the massive Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque to the tranquil Mangrove National Park.

The most beautiful cities in Australasia

    Adelaide, Australia

Among all of Australia’s enticing cities, Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, stands out for its inimitable combination of natural splendours and eclectic architectural styles. This relatively small city is dotted with Victorian buildings and Art Deco icons. It boasts abundant parks and gardens, golden sandy beaches and easy access to the vibrant vineyards of the Barossa Valley.

    Queenstown, New Zealand

Located towards the southern end of New Zealand’s South Island, Queenstown is renowned for its proximity to thrilling outdoor adventures – but the city itself is also undeniably exciting. With its postcard-worthy setting at the foot of the aptly named Remarkables mountain range and beside Lake Wakatipu, it’s the ultimate urban destination for travellers who usually prefer nature to cities.

    Wellington, New Zealand

Wellington is the capital of New Zealand and one of its most enticing cities, positioned between a picturesque harbour and undulating hills that offer sweeping views from their slopes. You can spend your time here hopping between cosy cafés and craft breweries, wandering along waterfront pathways, discovering secluded beaches or climbing the nearby peaks for epic panoramas.
