Incredible alpine scenery, wonderful hiking and quaint towns

Rolling hills carpeted with spring flowers, white slopes dotted with charming villages, the majestic snow-capped peaks of the Alps, and lively cities steeped in history – Switzerland is an exhilarating destination whatever time of year you visit.

From a scenic point of view, Switzerland is remarkable, and there’s so much to see:

  • Ride a funicular to the top of the Klein-Matterhorn and appreciate the sheer beauty of its towering neighbour.
  • Take a trip to Schaffhausen to see the spectacular Rhine Falls, the largest waterfall in Europe.
  • The countryside is full of picturesque chalets and historic castles waiting to be explored.

With such an epic landscape, outdoor enthusiasts are spoilt for choice in Switzerland. Skiing and snowboarding are the things to do in winter. Over the glorious summer months the country is renowned for on and off-road cycling, as well as its countless kilometres of spectacular hiking trails.

All of this activity prepares you for a spot of culinary indulgence, with cuisine inspired by neighbouring France, Germany and Italy. Switzerland’s hearty national specialities include as fondue, raclette and rösti. And of course, there’s the chocolate.

Picturesque cities such as Zurich, Bern, Lucerne, Basel and Lugano are well worth your time too, each have their own distinct regional characters and histories, hosting modern art galleries and fabulous shopping, particularly for those after Swiss-made watches.

When to Go

Switzerland is a year-round destination. In winter it is a mecca for skiiers, and there are plenty of winter hikes and snowshowing activites on offer. The alpine villages look idyllic under a blanket of snow. In spring and summer the meadows fill with wild flowers and the lakes look exceptionally beautiful. This is a great time for hiking and mountain biking. The cities are great any time of year, with lots of museums, galleries and great restaurants and Christmas markets in December.
