    Discover Brazil’s stunning southern paradise

Head south of Rio de Janeiro along Brazil’s extensive coastline and you’ll find Florianópolis, an area famous for its charming fishing villages and long stretches of picturesque beaches. Relaxing, surfing and swimming at sun-soaked spots like Praia dos Ingleses, Mole Beach and Joaquina beach are among the best things to do in Florianópolis, making it the perfect spot for a laidback beach trip, although water sports, hiking trails and city tours are also on the cards.

The port city of Florianópolis is the capital of the Santa Catarina state and sits on the island of Santa Catarina, connected to the mainland by two bridges. Brazilians continuously name Florianópolis as one of their favourite places in Brazil and it’s easy to see why upon exploring its golden coastline, which is home to 60 beaches.

The good waves and long beaches on the ocean facing side of the Santa Catarina island give the area several fantastic surfing spots, although there are also ample opportunities to wind surf, kayak and paraglide.

This in turn has led to it becoming a hotspot for food and drink and great nightlife, as well as plenty of other things to do. Head to Lagoa da Conceição for weekend markets selling arts and crafts and local honey, sandboarding on the dunes or kayaking and kitesurfing on the lagoon, where the balmy water has an average temperature of 27°C during summer.

    Highlights

Unwind on Florianópolis’ many beautiful beaches, or discover the world-class surf at Mole Beach and Joaquina Beach

Try watersports such as kayaking, windsurfing and kite surfing on the warm, gentle waters of Lagoa da Conceição

Thrillseekers will love sandboarding on the dunes between Lagoa da Conceição and Joaquina

Florianópolis is truly a paradise for beach lovers. With 60 different beaches to choose from, you’ll be truly spoilt for choice, although my personal favourite is Mole Beach, which stretches for 960 metres between rocky headlands and wooded hiking trails.

    When to visit

The best time to visit Brazil for warm weather is during summer, from December to March. Average daily temperatures range from 24°C–35°C (75°F–95°F), creating perfect conditions for experiencing Florianópolis’ many beautiful beaches.

This also coincides with the rainy season, and short rain showers during the afternoon or evening are common, although they won’t spoil the rest of the weather.

Try travelling during the shoulder months of April to May and September to November to enjoy pleasant weather with fewer visitors than during the peak summer months.
