Costa Verde is a long stretch of coastline in Brazil running between Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Paraty is recognised by UNESCO as a Creative City of Gastronomy, with its historic centre at the heart of the experience. Its food culture has deep links with caiçara communities, who have lived by the sea for generations. Their knowledge spans fishing, farming, forest plants, tides and culinary traditions.

You’ll spend time with a local family, learning how ingredients like cassava flour, banana, seafood and cachaça are used to prepare dishes from the region. You can combine this tour in Paraty with a stop at Fazenda Bananal, a restored 17th-century working farm just outside town.

Ilha Grande directly translates as ‘large island’, and it lives up to its name with over 100 forest-fringed beaches to explore. There are no cars, so most exploring is done on foot or by boat. You can follow nature trails, travel between coves, snorkel in clear waters and relax by the sea. Lopes Mendes is a long, open stretch of sand where Atlantic swell creates powerful waves, making it one of the best spots for confident surfers.
