Spanning nearly three million square miles, Australia is positively packed with extraordinary destinations. The best places to visit in Australia include the vast red deserts of the Outback, the sparkling beaches of the Whitsundays, the rainforests of Northern Queensland, the world’s largest barrier reef, spectacular cities like Sydney and one-of-a-kind islands like Tasmania.
Our advice is to visit as many places in Australia as possible: from Melbourne to Darwin, from Brisbane to Perth, from the emptiest deserts to the tallest peaks – and everywhere in between.

4. Melbourne
Melbourne is one of Australia’s largest and liveliest cities, located on the southern edge of the state of Victoria. After checking out its art galleries, museums and cafés, head outside the city to the Yarra Valley and Mornington Peninsula to discover some of the best vineyards in Australia.
Need to know: The craggy cliffs and rock art of Grampians National Park are about a three-hour drive inland from Melbourne.

5. Sydney
Sydney is a must-visit for anyone interested in Australian culture and history. Here you can tour the famous Opera House, scale the Harbour Bridge, soak up the sun on Bondi Beach and explore the city’s thriving culinary and cultural scenes.
Need to know: History buffs should head to the historic neighbourhood of the Rocks, home to museums, vintage pubs and heritage hotels like Pier One and the Langham.

6. New South Wales
New South Wales may be best known for its capital, Sydney, but it has much more to offer outside the city. This state boasts the Blue Mountains, one of the best national parks in Australia, where you can go hiking, canyoning or ride the world’s steepest passenger railway.
Need to know: New South Wales is also home to Byron Bay – a favourite among surfers and sun-seekers – and the renowned wineries of the Hunter Valley.

7. Tasmania
Australia includes more than 8,000 islands, but Tasmania is by far the largest. Spend your time here exploring the pristine wilderness of the Freycinet and Tasman National Parks, learning about the endemic Tasmanian devil and getting to know the lovely riverside city of Hobart.
Need to know: Separated from the mainland by the Bass Strait, Tasmania is only about an hour’s flight from Melbourne.

8. Western Australia
Western Australia is a land of untouched wilderness and sensational scenery. Landscapes here range from the yawning gorges and tumbling waterfalls of the Kimberley region to the aquamarine waters and reefs of the Ningaloo Coast.
Need to know: On the edge of the Chamberlain Gorge you’ll find the delightfully remote El Questro Homestead, one of the best luxury lodges in the world.

9. The Whitsundays
No list of Australian vacation destinations would be complete without the Whitsundays: an archipelago of 74 islands surrounded by the Great Barrier Reef. A paradise for scuba diving, snorkelling and water sports, these islands also boast some of the best beaches in Australia.
Need to know: Whitehaven Beach is especially alluring, with its white silica sand that stays miraculously cool even in the harshest sunlight.
