A gateway to the northwest
Salta is a gateway city in the northwest of Argentina. Nicknamed ‘La Linda’ (the beautiful) it was founded in the foothills of the Andes in colonial times, intended as staging point between Lima and Buenos Aires. Today, it serves as a convenient and interesting stop on many of our Argentina tours.
Beautiful Spanish buildings are found in the heart of the old town, but the real reason most visit Salta during one of our Argentina tours is a means of exploring the rest of this grand province and beyond.
The city sits in a fertile green valley surrounded by more adventurous and dramatic landscapes just a short drive away. It’s an ideal place to relax and soak up the pleasant climate for a few days before or after your adventures in the brightly coloured mountains and canyons.
Highlights
See the architecture of the old town
Explore the magnificent surrounding landscape on horseback
Hike through the fertile green valleys
Salta’s Baroque architecture and palm-lined plazas serve as a gateway to Argentina’s stark northwest altiplano. My favourite part of Salta was driving through the desert valley to Bodega Tacuil, which sits at 2,600 metres high, and tasting their exquisite wine.

When to visit
One of the best times to visit is from March to November, due to the cooler temperatures. During these months, you can discover the red rocks, white salt flats, azure blue lagoons, rural villages and pink flamingos on 4×4 tours and hikes.
The north of Argentina can be visited all year round, but during the summer (December to February) it can get incredibly hot, which isn’t ideal for longer hikes and outdoor activities.
