Volcanic landscapes, ancient ruins and cultural immersion
A Guatemala family vacation presents the perfect opportunity to combine outdoor adventures with cultural and historical insights. Here you can trek through the jungle and scale volcanic slopes, marvel at ancient archaeological sites and learn how Maya culture is maintained today, see baby turtles hatch and perhaps spot a quetzal amid the treetops.
Visit the beautiful high-altitude city of Antigua and delve into the myriad museums of Guatemala City. Make your way to Tikal to see Maya ball courts and towering temples. Explore the markets of Comalapa and Chichicastenango, and participate in hands-on workshops to learn about traditional woodworking, weaving, sewing, cooking, coffee or chocolate.
Adventurous families should head to Lake Atitlan for kayaking, boating and hiking – though it’s also a fantastic place to rest and recharge for a few days. The Pacific coast offers black sand beaches and surfing lessons, while the Caribbean coast boasts calmer waters and the wildlife-rich Rio Dulce.

When to visit Guatemala
Guatemala is a year-round destination, but the dry season from November to April is generally considered the best time to visit. During the rainier months from May to October, showers are likely but often short-lived – so it’s still possible to enjoy the outdoors throughout most of the year.
September and October are usually the rainiest months, and there’s often a mini dry season in July or August. Some significant festivals take place in the shoulder months, including Semana Santa in March/April and All Saints’ Day in November.
