    Afro-Brazilian culture

Discover African influences food, dance, music and more

Experience the vibrant heart of Bahia’s culture and history

Once the capital of Brazil, the colourful streets of Salvador are home to the spirit of the country’s Afro-Brazilian community, which lends its rhythm to the region’s music, food, dance and religion. Its strong cultural heritage creates many unique things to do on a luxury Salvador vacation, including learning the art of samba music or capoeira, a traditional martial art, or sampling the flavours of Afro-Brazilian cuisine with a Bahian cooking class. Other things to do include strolling through the colourful colonial streets of Pelourinho or relaxing on the tropical beaches.

On a luxury Salvador tour with Jacada, you can sensitively learn about the colonial history which shaped the region, and is still evident today through the UNESCO protected neighbourhood of Pelourinho and the city’s many beautiful churches.

Festivals here are frequent, and it’s one of the best places to experience Carnival – a must-do on any luxury Brazil tour. For a traditional African celebration, you can choose to learn about and witness a Candomblé ceremony, which honours African gods through music and chanting.

If you’re looking to fuel up for all the festivities, then acarajé is a must try streetfood, comprising a fried bean cake filled with onions and spices and shrimp. You can also learn to make moqueca, a seafood stew made with coconut milk, during a Bahian cooking class.
