When to visit Latin America for active adventures
The best time for active adventures and outdoor activities in Latin America depends on where exactly you’re going and what you’re planning to do. For instance, summer (December–February) is the best season to go hiking in Patagonia, while winter (May–October) is an ideal time to explore the Andean regions of Peru.
If you’re hoping to snorkel or scuba dive, head to Belize during the dry season from December to May. In Costa Rica, the dry season varies by region – and certain outdoor activities are only possible at specific times of year. Your best bet is to consult with a travel designer who knows the ins and outs of each destination.
Keep in mind that because the equator passes right through Latin America, the seasons are reversed in different destinations. Central America and the northernmost part of South America are in the Northern Hemisphere, while the rest of South America is in the Southern Hemisphere.
