Dutch history, canals, a bustling fishing port and calm serence enclaves

Negombo city is a large and bustling city in Sri Lanka, an important commercial hub and an administrative centre. Located just north of Colombo, Negombo carries much of the vibrant culture and energy that can be found in the capital, but with its own distinctive characteristics and arguably slower pace of life.  There’s a rich Dutch heritage here which can be seen in the canals and the remains of the 17th-century Dutch Fort, which in recent years became a prison.

The region is punctuated by palm groves and luscious landscapes, which offer the perfect retreat from the hustle and bustle of the big cities nearby. Hugging the coastline and separated by a thin stretch of land where one palm-fringed road leads to small shops, restaurants and beachside hotels, is the Negombo Lagoon. The lagoon is used for fishing, agriculture and is home to a variety of different wildlife, in particular birds. Look out for   cormorants, herons, egrets, gulls, terns and other waders among the mangroves.

    Highlights

Travel inland to tranquil coconut palm estates for peace and relaxation.

Watch fisherman on the Negombo Lagoon and learn about their way of life

Relax on palm fringed beaches and take a stroll at sunset

Learn about the picturesque Dutch canals that run along the coast

This is the perfect spot to end or start a trip. Conveniently close to the international airport, within easy reach of the capital and with it's own energetic city and port. Away from the hustle and bustle there's still plenty of opportunity to simply relax and soak up some beautiful Sri Lankan sunshine.
