Award-winning wines, exceptional eateries and interactive experiences
South Africa boasts a multifaceted culinary culture with roots in Indigenous traditions and influences from all over the world. A food-focused journey here is an opportunity to see – and taste – how the country’s complex past and dynamic present converge on the plate.
There are also several phenomenal wine regions in South Africa, which are collectively known as the Winelands. This part of the Western Cape is replete with rolling vineyards, grand estates and some of the world’s best vineyard hotels. Winelands tours can be adapted for families with children, too.
A Cape Town food tour is an essential experience, but there are also plenty of other activities to enjoy beyond this burgeoning culinary capital. Head just outside the city for South African winery tours and seaside dining on the Whale Coast, or complement safaris with cooking classes in the Kruger.
Luxury rail travel in South Africa is another great way to combine various regions while ensuring that every meal is memorable, thanks to exquisite on-board dining. When to visit South Africa for food and wine tours
South Africa is a year-round destination, and this is especially true when food and wine are your priorities. That said, Cape Town experiences expect the best weather during summer (December–February) when temperatures are highest and rainfall is lowest.
The Winelands are especially lovely in spring (September–November) and during the harvest season (February–April), both of which are among the best times of year for vineyard tours in South Africa. We especially recommend pairing wine tastings and food tours with safaris; September and October are ideal months to visit.
