London is one of the most exhilarating and diverse cities in the world. This thriving metropolis has a rich history evident at every street corner and yet it continues to innovate, reinvent itself and the lead the world. Capital of England, its privileged geographical location has enabled it to become a leading international centre for business and trade.
Historically, London developed with two centres which now form the City and the West End. A cluster of glistening high-rises, the City of London is the financial heart with institutions such as the Bank of England and Stock Exchange located here. But the medieval street pattern and old churches nestled between skyscrapers hint at a more complex narrative whilst the City’s boundaries date back to the walled Roman settlement, Londinium. East of the City, the storied East End is home to a melting pot of cultures as well as creative types.
Up the snaking Thames, Westminster became a centre of national power, home of royalty, aristocracy and government, countering the trading and mercantile hub of the City. From Buckingham Palace to the Houses of Parliament, Westminster Abbey and the Royal Parks, some of London’s most spectacular sites are situated here.
Forming between the two in the Georgian and Victorian eras, the West End is London’s glittering cultural hub with a whole range of internationally-renowned museums and art galleries. Piercing through the heart of the West End is Shaftesbury Avenue, the main axis of Theatreland forming a link between Piccadilly Circus and Covent Garden.
