Less than an hour south west of the capital, the UNESCO-awarded city of Antigua is easily one of the most enchanting in all of Latin America.

The setting in a central highland valley ringed by three volcanoes, the city was once one of the largest seats of the Spanish colonial empire and has a perfectly preserved blend of that era’s history and its captivating baroque architecture. Furthermore with Antigua’s modern and very well ordered cosmopolitan charm, it’s no wonder it has and continues to win over so many.

Being a fairly compact size you can stroll its criss-crossing avenidas and calles, explore its baroque cathedrals and museums, and sip coffee (made just a stone’s throw from the city) in its quaint plazas. Walking up to the Hill of the Cross gives you those great panoramas over the city, and then get up close to city life by visiting the central market and artisan workshops specialising in Jade, jewellery and textiles.

When to go

November to April are the driest months and best to travel. Even in the rainy season (May to October) it might only rain for a few hours a day, so it can still be visited during these months.
