A fragmentary fusion of dense evergreen forest cut by sparkling lakes and dominated by the looming presence of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field and the encroaching tip of the Northern Ice Field, the Aisen (or Aysén) Region feels like the farthest edge of the world, a sublime landscape barely touched by human presence ripe for adventure.

Despite being the third largest region in Chile, the area is also the most sparsely populated and several of the hotels are only accessible by boat or foot, ensuring a private and personal experience of the spectacular landscape. Its fjords and lakes are teeming with wildlife so the majority of waterside hotels offer boat, canoeing and kayaking trips out onto the deep blue glacial waters of the lakes. Venture further out to sea to catch glimpses of dolphins, marine otters and South American Sea Lions to name a few.

Our favourite spots include the water-carved marbled Capillas de Mármol, the second-largest lake in South America, Lago General Carrera or any one of the region’s several glaciers, although San Rafael is perhaps one of the best sights.
