Epic northern lights tours featuring snowmobiles, snow shoeing and fjord cruising
Seeing the northern lights – a remarkable atmospheric phenomenon of pulsing, swaying and flowing lights across the night sky – is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Our expert guides will take you to the best viewing spots, at the right time of the year, during the right time in moon and sun cycles. Our experienced travel designers will help you plan a trip that makes the most of all aspects of winter in Norway.
Norway’s extended winter shapes the landscape in remarkable ways. Ice formations along the coastline create temporary sculptures, frozen waterfalls transform into climbing challenges and snow-laden pine forests become silent wonderlands. On the Svalbard Islands, you might experience the rare magic of moonlit landscapes during the polar night, when a full moon reflects brilliantly off snow and ice.
But it’s not only the landscape you will connect with – on a bespoke tour organised by Scandinavian travel experts, you will experience an authentic connection with Norwegian culture. Discover the concept of koselig (similar to Danish hygge), think crackling fires, candlelight, woollen blankets and gathering with friends; experience centuries-old practices like dog sledding across vast white expanses or ice fishing for Arctic char or cod; and meet Sámi guides in Norwegian Sápmi, or Finnmark, to learn about traditional reindeer herding.
We focus on the meaningful details that make aurora hunting in Norway extraordinary.
Highlights
Experience an adventurous expedition cruise to the Svalbard Islands
Sail the Norwegian Fjords on a luxury winter cruise
Chase the northern lights in Norwegian Sápmi on a husky-led sledge
Take a tour from Tromsø to discover the Arctic tundra landscape on snowshoes
Enjoy an East Coast snowmobile safari on the Svalbard Islands to spot polar bears
Norway is a spectacular country to set out on a northern lights adventure, but it’s a remote and challenging environment and an expert guide with plenty of aurora experience can help maximise your chances of seeing the phenomenon. My tip is to get to the northernmost parts of Norway (Tromsø, the Lofoten Islands and Norwegian Sápmi), which has much more frequent aurora activity than in the south.

Where to go

Norwegian Fjords
These deep, narrow sea inlets carved by ancient glaciers define western Norway's coastline. Winter brings a stark beauty with snow-capped mountains reflected in dark waters, best admired from the deck of a luxury cruise ship.

Norwegian Lapland
The cultural homeland of the Indigenous Sámi people stretches across tundra plateaus, mountain valleys and ancient forests in northern Norway. Here, traditional reindeer herding continues alongside modern Sámi life.

The Lofoten Islands
Dramatic peaks rise directly from the sea in this Arctic archipelago, creating one of Norway's most striking landscapes. Fishing villages with red wooden cabins (rorbuer) dot the shoreline, while pristine beaches with surprisingly turquoise water sit beneath jagged mountains.

The Svalbard Islands
This remote Arctic archipelago sits halfway between mainland Norway and the North Pole, offering an extraordinary frontier experience. Home to more polar bears than people, Svalbard features glacier-carved mountains and vast ice fields.

Tromso
Surrounded by mountains and fjords, the Arctic capital of Tromsø is a warm and vibrant city with plenty of culture, and serves as the ideal base for northern lights tours.
Discover moreWhen to visit
For the best northern lights viewing opportunities, visit Norway in winter, from October to March.
In the north, above the Arctic Circle, winter brings the polar night or mørketid – a period when the sun doesn’t rise at all. Rather than complete darkness, you’ll experience a unique blue twilight for several hours each day, casting everything in soft, otherworldly hues.
