The Best Time to Visit Africa in 2025

Published on: March 28th, 2025

Africa is the world’s second–largest continent, encompassing more than four dozen countries and a vast array of climates. The ideal time to travel depends on where you’re going and what you want to do; for instance, if you’re hoping to go on safari in Kenya, Tanzania or Zimbabwe, the best time to visit Africa is during the dry season from around June to October.

We’ve created a detailed climate guide to explain the differences between months and seasons across this incredible continent. Because most of our trips focus on destinations in eastern and southern Africa, we’ve paid special attention to these regions – but we’ve also included North African countries like Morocco and Egypt, as well as islands like Zanzibar and the Seychelles.

Africa month–by–month weather guide

Because Africa is so large and geographically diverse, any month of the year can be a great time to visit. But the best time to travel to Africa for safaris isn’t necessarily the best time to visit Victoria Falls, explore Cape Town or see the Sahara. To ensure an optimal experience, it’s essential to understand which months are preferable for specific destinations and activities.

We’ve compiled a detailed climate guide with insight into the best places to go in each season, as well as an overview of the weather and temperatures across Africa throughout the year.

January in Africa

January is part of the green season in many southern African countries, including Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Zimbabwe. During this time, afternoon thunderstorms transform the landscapes into lush green vistas. Conditions may not be ideal for safaris, but January promises spectacular bird watching in all of these countries. The weather tends to be humid and hot, with highs of around 30ºC (86ºF) or even higher in Namibia, where it can exceed 38ºC (100ºF).

February in Africa

February is calving season in the Serengeti, making it one of the best times to visit Tanzania if you want to see baby wildebeest. Green season continues across southern Africa, while East African countries like Kenya and Rwanda experience a mini dry season. This is also one of the best times to visit Uganda if you want to go on safari in Queen Elizabeth National Park

March in Africa

Although March can be rainy in both eastern and southern Africa, it’s one of the best times to visit Zambia or Zimbabwe to see Victoria Falls, as water levels are starting to peak and the falls are at their most powerful. March is also among the best times to visit South Africa, especially if you want to experience the harvest season in the Winelands, where high temperatures hover around the upper 20sºC (low 80sºF).

April in Africa

April is a lovely time to discover the wonders of North Africa. It’s among the best times to visit Morocco for pleasantly warm weather, with daily highs around 24ºC (75ºF), and is the final month of spring in Egypt before the summer heat sets in. April is also one of the best times to go to the Seychelles, as it’s not too windy or rainy and conditions are perfect for scuba diving, birdwatching and beach days.

May in Africa

May is the first month of the dry season in many of Africa’s top safari destinations. It’s an especially good time to combine Victoria Falls with a safari in Zambia or Zimbabwe, or to head to South Africa or Botswana for wildlife viewing; you can expect highs around 28ºC (82ºF) in both the Kruger and the Okavango Delta, with clear skies and relatively small crowds.

June in Africa

June is a wonderful month for safaris across southern and eastern Africa. Dry weather causes the foliage to thin out and water sources to dry up, making animals easier to spot. Temperatures vary in each country, but are usually fairly warm. This is also the beginning of the peak season for gorilla trekking in Rwanda and Uganda and the final month of spring in Morocco

July in Africa

The dry season continues into July in Kenya, Tanzania, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe. South Africa sees the lowest temperatures of the year, with highs around 15–19ºC (59–66ºF) in most regions. July is among the best times to visit Zanzibar, with warm sunny weather and optimal conditions for kitesurfing. It’s also a good time for whale watching in Mozambique.

August in Africa

August is one of the best months to visit Africa for wildlife viewing, and is specifically among the best times to visit Kenya to see the Great Migration. This is when the dramatic river crossings begin and the herds make their way from the Serengeti into the Maasai Mara. It’s the heart of the dry season, meaning not just nice weather and game visibility but also a lower malaria risk.

September in Africa

September is one of the best months for luxury African tours across the whole continent. It’s still nice and dry in most safari destinations, as well as Zanzibar and the Seychelles. Morocco is entering the cooler autumn months; average temperatures drop to the 20sºC (70sºF). This is also a fantastic time for a larger tour of South Africa combining various regions and activities.

October in Africa

October is the beginning of the cooler season in Egypt and the end of the dry season across southern and eastern Africa. It’s among the best times to go scuba diving or snorkelling in the Seychelles. In Namibia, October marks the start of the best season to see both desert flowers and baby seals – and to visit the Skeleton Coast, where temperatures peak around 22ºC (72ºF).

November in Africa

In most of southern and eastern Africa, the rainy season sets in around November. That said, this is among the best times to visit Namibia, as it’s still mostly dry and conditions are good for both safaris and bird watching. It’s also a great month to go to Morocco or Egypt, and to enjoy the beaches of South Africa. In Cape Town, temperatures climb to the mid 20sºC (75–79ºF).

December in Africa

December is the best time to visit Africa if you want to experience the green season in Botswana, Zambia or Zimbabwe. Toward the end of the month, Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda enter a short dry season. This is also among the best times to visit Botswana’s Central Kalahari Game Reserve, despite temperatures in the low 30sºC (86–91ºF) and some rain showers.

The best time to go on safari in Africa

The best time to go on safari in Africa is generally during the dry season, when visibility is highest and animals gather around watering holes. In most southern African countries, including Namibia, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe, the best months for safaris tend to be May through October. In certain destinations the peak safari season starts a bit later, in June or July.

The best time to go on safari in East Africa isn’t quite as straightforward, as countries like Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda and Uganda have two dry seasons: one from around June to September/October, and another shorter one from December/January to February/March. That said, we usually recommend visiting during the longer dry season for the best safari conditions.
