Pristine beaches and remote safari across protected coastal and wilderness expanses

Mozambique is located on one of Africa’s longest Indian Ocean coastlines. Low-lying islands, coral reefs and seagrass beds support some of the richest marine life in southern Africa. Inland, Gorongosa National Park is one of the country’s most important protected areas, noted for its varied ecosystems, biodiversity and long-term conservation work.

From the mainland, visit Bazaruto Archipelago. These islands are part of a protected national park known for clear waters, coral reefs and one of the last remaining dugong populations in the western Indian Ocean. You can snorkel in shallow lagoons alongside tropical fish and turtles, and spot dolphins moving between islands. Look out for humpback whales along the coast when they migrate from June to October.

In towns such as Vilanculos, you can explore local life with fishing boats pulled up on the sand and markets selling fresh prawns, nuts and produce. From the beach, crews take you out by boat for island picnics, dhow sailing and snorkelling.

Our experts highly recommend a safari experience in Gorongosa National Park. Its floodplains, forests and savannahs are home to lions, elephants, hippos, crocodiles and a remarkable variety of birdlife. You will also have the opportunity to learn about the incredible conservation success stories and complex history of this important protected wildlife haven.

Bush and beach combine beautifully in Mozambique. The country can also be visited as part of a longer itinerary taking in some of its Southern African neighbours. Get in touch to start planning your journey today.

A word from one of our experts

I love how quickly you go from the mainland to the water, splashing straight off the boat into the warm shallows of the Indian Ocean. Snorkelling here is calm, and you can take your time appreciating just how rich the marine life is. Paired with a safari experience, it’s such a satisfying mix of wild nature and relaxation.

    When to visit Mozambique

August and September are late winter in Mozambique, making them a good time to combine Bazaruto with a southern African safari. During this time, dry conditions support better wildlife viewing inland and across the wider region.

The dry season runs from May to October, bringing warm days, calmer seas and more settled weather along the coast. This is also a good time to include Gorongosa National Park. The dry weather means clear paths that are easier to navigate and front-row seats to the wildlife. Diving and fishing are strongest from May to September, when visibility improves and marine activity increases.
