With its origins as a research vessel for the Russian Academy of Science, the cruise ship Ortelius is perfectly equipped to explore the ice-laden waters of the Antarctic Peninsula.
The Ortelius has the highest ice-class notation for carving through solid and pack sea ice, open-deck spaces providing ample observation areas to enjoy the wildlife and scenery, and a highly experienced nautical crew of twenty, alongside a number of expedition guides, stewards and lecturers. Accommodation comprises of 48 cabins.
There are a choice of itineraries available to visit some of the most remote destinations around Antarctica, voyaging to the Wendell Sea to witness Emporer Penguins via helicopter, whale watching in the Polar Circle and also incorporating the Falklands and South Georgia Sea into longer trips. Activities on these trips include polar diving with fur and leopard seals, kayaking along the Antarctic coastlines and technical mountaineering expeditions for the more adventurous.
