Explore the vast sands and stay in luxurious desert camps

Lose yourself in a seemingly endless ocean of golden sand dunes. Oman‘s Wahiba Sands invites you to drink in the stark beauty of an ever-shifting desert landscape. Named for the Bani Wahiba tribe, this region covers some 12,500 square kilometres and is rippled with dunes run north to south. Those nearest the coast are highest, some reaching up to 100m (330ft) tall. As the sun cuts its path across the sky, the sands change from deep yellows to intense oranges and glowing golds.

Nighttime brings with it an astoundingly deep black sky, flung with countless stars. Far removed from the light pollution of towns and cities, you’ll be treated to some phenomenal star gazing out here.

Due to the constantly moving dunes, you won’t find any established roads here, just tracks leading to desert camps, and trails formed by the Bedouin people who call the desert home. Spend a few nights in a welcoming camp experiencing the breathtaking beauty of the desert, dining on wholesome Omani dishes beside crackling fires, cooling off in a pool at the beautiful Wadi Bani Khalid oasis, and going for exhilarating dune-bashing adventures in 4x4s.

    Highlights

Enjoy a wholesome dinner of traditional dishes under the stars beside a crackling fire.

Unwind in the refreshing aqua pools of the beautiful Wadi Bani Khalid.

Race across the ever-shifting sands on an adrenalin-pumping 4×4 adventure.

A visit to Wahiba Sands is a fantastic experience. The evening we drove up to the top of the dunes by our camp for sundowners overlooking the vast desert, then the next day we hopped on quad bikes and headed out onto the sand. Combine this with a visit to a local Bedouin family, driving everywhere in a 4x4 roaming through the dunes.
