Historic city streets and wild mountain terrain

The ancient city of Nizwa, in northern Oman, is known not only for its historic buildings, but also for its silversmiths and handicrafts. The city is surrounded by plains, rivers and palm plantations.

Built in the 17th-century, Nizwa Fort, with its huge cylindrical tower, is one of the most popular attractions in the city. It’s a stellar example of Omani architecture and it played an important role in protecting the city from invaders in days gone by. A climb to the top of the tower rewards you with spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and the sea. Its proximity to both make it obvious why the city was an important meeting place for merchants. Even today, the Nizwa Souq is well worth a visit. Take your time browsing fascinating stalls piled high with traditional goods, aromatic spices, intricately woven carpets, tasty dates, beautiful jewellery and even rose water.

Another interesting place to visit is Bahla Fort, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987. The massive mud-walled complex includes mosques, towers and wells. It is believed to date back to between the 12th and 15th centuries.

In northeastern Oman you’ll find the Hajar Mountains, the wildest and highest terrain in the country. Rich in plant life, compared to the rest of Arabia, and home to many endemic species, the region offers incredible walking and hiking opportunities. There are also the archaeological sites of Bat, Al-Khutm and Al-Ayn which offer a glimpse into prehistoric times. The stargazing is also incredible.

Highlights

Bring out your adventourous side mountaineering on the Via Ferrata.

Hear the stories of the universe with a private stargazing session.

Go on an adventurous drive across the Hajar mountain range. Cross deep wadis and pass small villages, where people still live in ancient buildings.

Walk to the ancient abandoned oasis of Birkat al Mouz, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The perfect place for adventure, the Al Hajar Mountains give you options to hike between hillside mountains, or for the more adventurous you can hang from the side of the mountains on a Via Ferrata. You'll also love stargazing in the evening, with an astrologist who can point out some of the incredible constellations.

When to Visit

Although the weather is generally good all year round, the best time to visit Nizwa is between September and March, after the warmest months when temperatures can be too high for comfort (May to September). During springtime, in April, you may catch the blooming season for roses in the lush mountains just outside of Nizwa. The region sees its highest numbers of visitors in November and December.
