Winter family tours can take many forms, depending on the sort of experience you’re looking for. You can embrace the frigid air and serene snowscapes of northern Sweden or Norway, or curl up by the fire with a mug of hot chocolate amid the Alpine peaks of Switzerland.

Alternatively, head to tropical winter destinations like Mexico or Costa Rica for balmy temperatures that provide a respite from cold weather elsewhere – and take advantage of seasonal highlights like whale watching and low rainfall.

Winter in the Southern Hemisphere lasts from June to August and is a great time to hike through Peru or spot wildlife in the Amazon. We can arrange family-friendly treks to Machu Picchu and Amazon river cruises for all ages.

The Chedi

Lost in the valleys and high Alpine regions of Andermatt, the Chedi Hotel is an opulent oasis of luxury and sophistication. A unique blend of Japanese and Swiss design, the dark wood and natural stone provide a warm and welcoming getaway from the sheets of snow that decorate the village in the winter, and the perfect place to soak up the beautiful scenery in summer. Rooms and suites are cosy and warm with soft leather chairs and large bath tubs to sink into at the end of the day. Some of the suites come with private balconies from where you can look out across Andermatt’s iconic peaks. Culinary treats abound with several dining options available to guests. The Japanese Restaurant prepares authentic sushi, sashimi and tempura while The Chalet serves traditional Swiss fare in a timbered restaurant complete with red and white tablecloths and old posters of Andermatt. Take a seat in front of the roaring fire and wrap yourself in a blanket in the lounge during winter, or head to the courtyard and enjoy a cocktail or glass of wine in the shadow of Gemsstock Mountain in summer. After a day exploring the deep gorges and mountain paths, relax with a treatment at the spa, take a dip in the indoor or outdoor pool or let off some steam in the Finnish sauna. There is also a fully equipped gym and the option to take yoga classes or train with a personal trainer. There are numerous snow activities to get to grips with while in the warmer summer periods there are over 500km worth of hiking routes to tackle. Explore paths that will take you across remote natural treasures, lonely mountain lakes and onto icy peaks.

Location is everything at Sala’s Camp. Nestled in the Maasai Mara National Park, but in a very remote southern-central corner of it on the tranquil banks of the Sand River, Sala’s boasts the most private of safari experiences within the reserve’s borders.

Around Mérida

Chablé Resort & Spa

Just 30 minutes from Merida and nestled in the Yucutan jungle is Chablé Resort & Spa, a wonderful retreat with a focus on wellness. Chablé is spread over 300 hectares but the actual resort only covers 30, so there is plenty of open space in which to find your own tranquil corner. There are 38 casitas with private pools as well as two larger villas, perfect for families or groups of friends. The original 19th-century walls form the basis of each casita but inside the decor is contemporary and colourful with local wood and stone used throughout. At the heart of the resort is a natural cenote, which forms the centre of the spa. Surrounded by the Mayan forest, this is a wonderful place to unwind with a treatment and take advantage of the sauna, steam room, Jacuzzi and salt cabin. Take a dip in the infinity pool or get your heart rate up in the gym or on the tennis court. There are three restaurants at Chablé, all of which use fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs from the organic garden. Ixi’im, translates as corn in the Mayan language, and the menu is a innovative blend of regional and local Mexican flavours. Ki’ol, meaning healthy, offers light snacks and ceviche, and the spa restaurant caters for a range of dietry requests with dedicated gluten free, lactose free and vegan menus. Chablé has one of the country’s largest tequila collections and guests can have great fun discovering this most Mexican of spirits with a tequila and chocolate tasting. There is also the option to take part in a cooking class with local chefs who will help you bring out the true flavours of Mexico. One of the joys of staying at Chablé is taking the time to fully unwind and recharge. However, should you wish to go exploring then there are bikes to hire and incredible Maya ruins to discover.
