A tropical paradise brimming with history, wildlife and natural beauty

Make your family safari in Africa even more incredible by spending a few days in this awe-inspiring archipelago. A family trip to Zanzibar is the perfect complement to a longer adventure, or the primary destination for an unforgettable island getaway.

Located just a short flight from Tanzania or Kenya, it’s replete with tropical beaches and private island resorts designed to cater specifically to your family’s needs. Lounge on soft sandy shores lapped by gentle waves, or board a private boat for a bespoke tour of the islands.

Grab a snorkelling mask to observe dazzling marine life, or dive deeper on guided scuba expeditions. For some educational fun, we can organise walking tours through Stone Town’s storied streets and markets or an excursion to Prison Island – which is now inhabited by a population of Aldabra giant tortoises. And if anyone in your family has ever wanted to try kitesurfing, this is one of the world’s best places to do it.

Our travel designers can help you choose from the best family-friendly hotels in Zanzibar. We especially love the family banda at Mnemba Island Lodge and the gorgeous private villa on Thanda Island, which is ideal for larger groups looking for complete privacy.

    Highlights

Glide through lush mangrove forests on a stand-up paddle boarding tour

Try tropical fruits and local delicacies at the Darajani Bazaar and Forodhani night market in Stone Town

Visit the grandiose House of Wonders and Palace Museum for insights into Zanzibar’s past

Head to kid-friendly beaches like Nungwi, Kendwa and Paje for shallow waters and calm tides

Go to the village of Makunduchi in July to see the traditional celebrations of the Mwaka Kogwa festival

Zanzibar's warm, shallow waters are perfect for snorkelling and spotting marine wildlife like starfish and tropical fish. I love combining island life with a few days on safari on the mainland for a balance of adventure and a relaxing time on the beach.

    When to visit Zanzibar

For families seeking sunshine and tropical temperatures, Zanzibar is a year-round destination. That said, we recommend visiting during the main dry season from June to October for the lowest chance of rain, or during the shorter dry season from January to February.

While temperatures hover around 30ºC (86ºF) throughout the year, the best months to enjoy the archipelago’s beaches are July, August and September. These months are also a good time to experience cultural festivals, along with February and October.
