Explore the Altiplano where history meets breathtaking nature
The Peruvian Altiplano is a realm of breathtaking extremes where ancient civilisations once flourished surrounded by spectacular natural wonders and barren beauty. To spend time here is to journey into a unique landscape steeped in history and mythology.
Sculpted by the erosion of an ancient lake that once shaped the Altiplano, Tinajani Canyon is home to burial sites and towering Puya Raimondi trees. Go hiking and biking along stunning canyon trails to discover hidden ruins and spend time surrounded by the local flora and fauna, and drink in spectacular views of the high-altitude plains and soaring Andean peaks. Weave your way through these snow-capped peaks, the mountains echoing with the ancient spirit of Pachamama – Mother Earth. In Incan mythology, this goddess embodies the mountains and presides over life on Earth. Watch guanacos prancing among the native plant life, grazing on leaves made vibrant by the closing rainy season. And see the adobe houses, baked warm by the gentle sun, which punctuate the roadside.
By day, the cool and dry climate, characterised by clear skies and pure mountain air, is ideal for exploration, while by night, the deep purple depths of the sky are strewn with stars.
The region is also home to the world’s highest navigable lake, Lake Titicaca, a place of deep spiritual significance for the Indigenous Quechua and Aymara people. A local guide will help you to gain a deeper understanding of the Altiplano’s rich cultural heritage, as you discover pre-Incan ruins and exciting artisan communities.
Highlights
Set out on a short hike to the Centennial Qolle Tree, the only tree that has managed to grow in Tinajani Canyon. Here you’ll have space to meditate and reflect on its resilience as the sun rises
Immerse yourself in the natural beauty of the area as you watch the magical sunset from spectacular miradores (view points), enjoying delicious appetisers and admiring the striking geology of the canyon
Venture into the vast Puya de Raimondi forest. The journey takes you along dirt trails and past rock formations, into a valley where thousands of towering puyas rise over the highlands. You can traverse the area by vehicle or bicycle
The Peruvian Altiplano is a place of profound mystique, where ancient civilisations once thrived amidst a breathtaking landscape of soaring peaks and the spiritual waters of Lake Titicaca. Journeys here blend exhilarating hikes and bike rides with the chance to connect with local communities, giving you an unforgettable glimpse into a living cultural heritage.
