Luxury Panama family tours between two oceans
Panama is a narrow isthmus connecting North and South America, with the Caribbean Sea to its north and the Pacific Ocean to the south. It’s a small and captivating country, with plenty to keep the whole family entertained. Panama City with its modern skyline and beautiful Casco Viejo (the old quarter, sometimes called Casco Antiguo) is a fascinating first stop.
The capital’s Spanish, Indigenous and Afro-Caribbean-inspired food is sensational, and you will learn about the city’s culinary history and try Panamanian cuisine on an expert-led food tour of the old quarter’s restaurants. Just outside the city, watch as massive ships navigate the Miraflores locks, part of the 51-mile engineering marvel that is the Panama Canal.
If you’re in Panama with kids, we recommend some time spent on the country’s stunning beaches, and some of Panama’s best beaches are found on its offshore islands. On the Caribbean coast, the Bocas del Toro archipelago offers calm, turquoise waters and rainforest trails, while the San Blas Islands provide a chance to learn about indigenous Guna culture. On the Pacific coast, the Gulf of Chiriquí is famous for its biodiversity – twice-yearly migrating whales are a huge draw for a family trip to Panama. And, you can go kayaking through its mangrove forests, or snorkel and dive its astonishing coral reefs (surfing is excellent on either coastline of Panama, with the Pacific generally better for beginners).

When to visit Panama
Panama’s dry season is between late December and April, which is a great time to plan your trip, especially if you’re focusing on Panama’s Pacific coast. Expect warm days around 32°C (89.6°F) with lots of sun – ideal for beach time, visiting the Panama Canal and hiking in the central mountains. Panama stays tropical year-round with occasional showers, though the Caribbean coast tends to be wetter, with afternoon rain common even outside the main rainy season.
It’s worth noting that the rainy season can be a great time to skip the crowds and witness the unbelievably beautiful green, lush landscapes – and it’s a good time for surfing bigger breaks on the Pacific coast, too.
