Italy is undoubtedly among the world’s most romantic destinations, from its rolling green vineyards and glittering coastlines to rainbow-hued houses and awe-inspiring architecture. Whether your idea of romance involves cocktails with a view of the Amalfi Coast, lakeside luxury on the shores of Lake Como or a visit to the setting of Romeo and Juliet, you’ll find it here.

The most romantic places in Italy are scattered all over the country, including iconic sites like Venice and the Cinque Terre as well as rural hideaways in the Alps and Tuscany. We’ve selected just a few of our favourite spots for a luxury trip for two, whether it’s a honeymoon, a special occasion or simply a chance to enjoy this incredible country with the one you love.

    Venice

Venice might just be the most romantic city in Italy – and perhaps the entire world. With its winding canals, whimsical gondolas and picture-perfect bridges, the whole place seems straight out of a fairytale. There are endless activities for couples to enjoy, whether you want to discover the city’s rich history or just relax by the water with some seafood and a glass of Prosecco.

Need to know: Venice is made up of 118 islands, and it’s well worth exploring them; some of our favourite experiences can be found a short boat ride away from the main island.

    Lake Como

The legendary Lake Como is a magnet for glamorous guests and Hollywood stars, but it’s also one of the best places to go in Italy for couples. Located in northern Italy between Milan and the border with Switzerland, this peaceful destination invites you to sit back, relax and breathe in the fresh air. It’s a romantic honeymoon destination ideal to disconnect from the world and reconnect with each other.

Need to know: In addition to resting and recharging, you can also enjoy water sports and explore the charming towns dotted around the lake, which are easily accessible by ferry.

    The Dolomites and the Alps

In Italy, romantic vacations often focus on the coast or historic cities – but up north there’s a whole other world to explore. If you and your partner prefer the mountains to the sea, head straight to the Dolomites and the Alps. Here you’ll find dramatic peaks, snowy summits, sparkling glaciers and enchanting towns full of castles and distinctive local culture.

Need to know: If you want to embark on a thrilling outdoor adventure together, you’ll find plenty of opportunities here. A stunning year-round destination that we particularly love in summer (June to August), often considered the best time to go to Italy, when the rest of the country can feel hot and crowded. Here, the fresh air and open spaces are perfect for hiking to climbing and mountain biking.

    The Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast boasts the sort of views that are instantly recognisable and impossible to forget. Encompassing the beautiful towns of Positano, Sorrento, Amalfi, Ravello and more, this destination is known for the colourful buildings clinging to its hillsides, epic views of the sea and delectable local specialties like freshly caught seafood and homemade limoncello.

Need to know: The Amalfi Coast is one of the romantic destinations in Italy not only for its breathtaking vistas, but also its outstanding hotels; we especially love Le Sirenuse for couples.

    Tuscany

Sweeping fields of sunflowers, verdant vineyards, hilltop villages and graceful cypress trees… These are the hallmarks of Tuscany, the region that’s home to Florence, Pisa and infinite rural charm. If you’re hoping for a romantic honeymoon in Italy featuring fine wine, locally sourced Italian cuisine, world-class art and ancient culture, Tuscany should be at the top of your list.

Need to know: If you’re based in Florence you can easily explore the surrounding area, but for the most intimate experience, we suggest staying at a country estate like Borgo Pignano.

    Cinque Terre

Visiting Cinque Terre is like getting five different destinations in one; its name literally means ‘five lands.’ The lands in question are small villages perched right on the coast, their brightly coloured buildings spilling down the cliffs to the sea. Spend your time wandering between the towns with your partner, stopping to sample the wines produced on the terraced hills above you.

Need to know: For an alternative perspective, head out on a private boat trip along the Ligurian coastline. You can see the Cinque Terre from afar and visit the glamorous Portofino as well.

    Verona

Any list of romantic vacations in Italy has to include Verona: the setting of Romeo and Juliet, one of the most famous love stories of all time. Apart from this claim to fame, the city is also lovely in its own right. It’s relatively quiet but no less beautiful than busier locales, with a wealth of art, medieval history, wonderful shopping and authentic Italian fare.

Need to know: You can easily add Verona to your itinerary as a day trip from Venice or Milan, although it’s certainly worth spending a few nights here to fully enjoy the city; especially if you’re travelling in June, as it’s considered one of the 10 best places to visit during this month.
