Track mountain gorillas on luxury Rwanda family tours

Rwanda’s physical geography is dramatic. Hilly and mountainous, including five dormant volcanoes within the Virunga mountain range. The sub tropical climate is characterised by mild temperatures and abundant rainfall, creating a land that drips in dark green, thick foliage.

The capital Kigali, where you will start your family trip in Rwanda, is built onto (and on top of) hills and into valleys; the city appears to roll into its different neighbourhoods. It’s also widely accepted as the cleanest city in Africa, with Umuganda (a day each month dedicated to upkeep of the city) a significant factor. Here you can try traditional food, learn about tradition, visit museums and shop for textiles – guided by a local expert.

After a night or two settling in, it’s time to venture to Rwanda’s forests, wetlands, sweeping savannahs and mist-shrouded volcanic peaks. In Akagera National Park, you and your family will embark on daytime and nighttime game drives – by jeep and by boat – spotting elephants, lions, giraffes and the rare shoebill stork. Nyungwe National Park, one of Africa’s oldest rainforests, holds an exhilarating canopy walk high above the forest floor, with rare birds and butterflies, and a host of primates, including chimpanzees.

Your family safari in Rwanda will always include the Volcanoes National Park, where you take part in endangered mountain gorilla tracking. You will trek with guides and trackers, adhering to strict animal welfare protocols. The park also offers opportunities to spot golden monkeys and you can hike to Dian Fossey’s memorial, to pay tribute to the legendary primatologist whose work heavily contributed to the preservation of mountain gorillas.

Between wildlife adventures, unwind along the serene shores of Lake Kivu, or journey north to the twin lakes of Burera and Ruhondo in the foothills of the Virunga massif. Speak to our team of travel experts to start planing your own, personalised Rwanda family vacation.

    When to visit Rwanda

Rwanda has two dry seasons, one lasting from June until September and the other from December to February, and during these months fewer rain showers means better conditions for trekking to see the gorillas. If you want to explore the wilderness, it’s best to avoid the long rainy season between March and May, though chimps can be easier for guides to spot in the rainy season
