Combine game drives with marine safaris in search of Sri Lanka’s Big Five

Blue whale spotting and wilderness expeditions through remote, wildlife-rich national parks

Our bespoke Sri Lanka tours pair intimate lodge stays immersed in nature with adventures into national parks and wildlife reserves. Alongside naturalists and local conservation groups, spend your days learning about an extraordinary variety of wildlife, including the island’s Big Five: Sri Lankan leopards, Sri Lankan elephants, sloth bears, blue whales and sperm whales.

Covering Sri Lanka’s southeastern corner, Yala National Park has one of the world’s highest leopard densities, and a private game drive offers excellent chances of spotting them. This diverse wilderness of forest, savannah and wetlands also supports water buffaloes, crocodiles and more than 200 bird species.

Nearby Udawalawe National Park is one of our favourite places to observe wild elephants, with hundreds roaming its grasslands and riverine forests. Or take a boat safari in remote Gal Oya National Park, where elephants can sometimes be seen swimming between islets on Senanayake Samudra reservoir.

In Wilpattu National Park, leopards, elephants and spotted deer are often drawn to the park’s distinctive villus – lakes formed in sand-rimmed craters. May to July is a good time to look for sloth bears feeding on the sweet fruit of palu trees. And around the park’s wetlands and permanent water sources, keep watch for mugger crocodiles, monitor lizards and soft-shelled turtles.

Off the southern coast, head out from Mirissa in search of blue whales, sperm whales and dolphins. The main whale-watching season typically runs from November to April.

A word from one of our experts

I always think carefully about timing when planning wildlife trips in Sri Lanka. Between September and March, Bundala is especially good for migratory birds. And November to May is a strong window for seeing larger elephant herds in Wasgamuwa.

Cape Weligama

A collection of private suites and villas offering 39 huge bedrooms in total are laid out like a traditional village with stylish living spaces beneath terracotta tiled rooftops. All enjoy butler services, a large terrace with dining and spa facilities, steam room, stone bathtubs, spacious walk in wardrobes and state of the art in room entertainment systems. Between these are tropical gardens and 14 swimming pools, some private and some shared, such as the incredible 60m crescent shaped infinity pool with fine sea views. You’ll also find four restaurants, with Pola serving the day’s freshest catch and the Cape Colony Club a relaxed yet refined venue for traditional high tea and sunset cocktails. Spa treatments can be organised in room, or head to the Spa Villa to indulge with homegrown spice scrubs and bespoke massages that incorporate Ceylon tea, an ingredient renowned for its antioxidant, anti-ageing and calming properties. There are two adjacent public beaches and a reef provides safe swimming conditions. The Sports Centre is staffed by professionals and is the embarkation point for all land and water-based activities, such as PADI dive courses and exciting dives, private cruises, big game fishing, seasonal whale and dolphin-watching trips aboard a luxury catamaran, kayaking and snorkelling. You can also explore Sri Lanka’s lush rural hinterland of sleepy villages, paddy fields, meandering lagoons and ancient temples on guided bicycle rides.

The best time to visit Sri Lanka for wildlife viewing

The dry season tends to bring some of the best wildlife viewing in Sri Lanka. These months generally fall from November to March in the south and west, May to September in the north and east, and January to April in Hill Country. For the best chance of spotting leopards, visit Yala National Park from May to October.

Visit Minneriya National Park from May to October, when hundreds of elephants gather around the receding reservoir during the ‘Great Elephant Gathering’. In Gal Oya National Park, elephants may be seen swimming between islets year-round.
