Itinerary in detail
Days 1–3
Three days in Kathmandu
Nepal’s capital Kathmandu sprawls 1,350 metres above sea level. With three full days here, you’ll have plenty of time to acclimatise – and to explore. Wander past intricately carved timber Newari buildings, some dating from the 12th century. In Durbar Square, the former Hindu sattal or rest house, Kasthamandap, was rebuilt by residents after the 2015 earthquake.
Your Kathmandu cultural tour will take you down maze-like streets to wooden temples and pagodas. Explore Pashupatinath Temple, the country’s biggest Hindu shrine. Its two-tiered gold pagoda stands by the Bagmati River, with cremation ghats (funeral grounds) on the steps leading to the water. Head to contrasting districts like Baneshwor, known as the commercial hub, and upscale shopping area Durbar Marg.
Visit Jhamsikhel for craft beer spots and diverse, modern dining, or Thamel, whose slender alleyways are stuffed with shops, bars and cafes. Restaurants and street hawkers serve specialities like momo dumplings, dal bhat (lentil stew with steamed rice) and chataamari, a rice crepe with toppings, a little like a pizza.

Learn the Nepali art of Thangka painting
Thangka painting is used as a teaching tool for monks to illustrate the life history of Gautam Buddha, holy monks and deities. The resulting works, created as scrolls on cotton or silk, are also prized for their artistic value. In this hands-on class, you’ll be guided through its forms and processes by local experts. Create your own colourful Thangka painting to take home as a souvenir.

Explore the Buddhist shrine complex of Swayambhunath
Swayambhunath stupa is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Kathmandu Valley. Reached via a road or 365 stone steps, it’s nicknamed Monkey Temple for the hundreds of rhesus macaques that live among the monasteries, shrines and temples. See the Sleeping Buddha, view the gold-plated thunderbolt shape on its east side, and hear the legend of how it grew from a single lotus flower.

Spend time with a summiteer and hear stories about the mountain
This unforgettable experience puts you in the company of an Everest summiteer. They’ll talk you through the processes and challenges of conquering the world’s highest peak, with vivid stories of scaling icy terrains and forging bonds with fellow climbers. With time to ask questions and spend time with your host, you’ll gain a fascinating insight into their experience.
Days 3–8
Take to the water in Pokhara
Travelling northwest from Kathmandu, your active Nepal itinerary continues in Pokhara. Once a major trading post between India and Tibet, the city sits by Phewa Tal at the base of the Himalayas. Lakeside restaurants serve traditional dishes made with local ingredients. The city also has several yoga hubs and the International Mountain Museum, focused on Himalayan people and the history of mountaineering.
A gateway to mountain exploration, the area offers up its own adventures. You’ll spend your days on and around the water. Take a private tour in a colourfully painted dhunga or rowboat on Phewa Tal. You’ll paddle close to the Hindu temple, Tal Barahi, whose two-storey pagoda sits on an island in the middle of the lake. Step the adventures up a level with a Pokhara rafting trip on the Seti River, which has whitewater rapids and a more serene lower section for cruising.

Beyond the water
Pokhara paragliding
Helicopter tour
Bungee jump

Glide above the lake and mountains
This unforgettable adventure takes you up to the high hilltop of Sarankot, known for incredible sunrises and rolling Himalayan views. Guided by an expert paragliding pilot, you’ll be fully briefed and equipped before launching into the skies. Soar above Phewa Lake and mountain peaks, looking out for crested serpent eagles and Himalayan griffon vultures.

See the ‘Kingdom of Lo’ from a private helicopter
Visitor numbers to Lo Manthang, a 15th-century walled city in Upper Mustang, are tightly restricted, but you’ll see its soaring earthen walls, monasteries and palace in all their sprawling glory on a private helicopter tour, and disembark for a closer look. Flying home, take in the stark surrounding landscape of eroded canyons and stratified rock formations.

Tackle one of the world’s tallest bungee jumps
Kushma Bungee Jump is among the world’s tallest, launched from 228 metres above the Kaligandaki River gorge. For this thrilling experience, you’ll be guided through a thorough safety briefing before heading to the platform on Kushma Bridge, a 525-metre suspension bridge. Then, freefall and swing over the gorge with views of surrounding forested slopes and peaks.
Days 8–11
Trek through the mountains of Annapurna
From Pokhara, you’ll launch straight into an unforgettable Nepal hiking tour with a trek through Annapurna. This protected conservation area is named for the 8,091-metre mountain that looms above a sea of peaks. Every view competes for attention. Kali Gandaki Gorge plummets for 5,500 dramatic metres to the west. The Marshyangdi River winds around the north and east sides, while Pokhara and Phewa Tal sit prettily at the southern foot of the mountain.
Annapurna means ‘mother who feeds’ in Sanskrit. Over three days, your Himalayan hiking adventure will immerse you in the nourishing mountain landscapes. Begin with a trek to Dhampus, spending time with Gurung people in their villages. Follow the ridgeline trail to Australian Camp, passing staggered agricultural terraces and seasonal walls of rhododendron blooms. And reach Kande via stone staircases surrounded by forest.

Room with a mountain view

Accommodation during your Nepal trekking tour will be at Dhampus Lodge. Comfortable, solar-powered rooms, each with its own bathroom, are cosy with layered textures and warm tones. They also come with endless views across the Annapurna Massif, especially beautiful during sunset happy hour on the grassy terrace. Dine on traditional Nepali dishes made with vegetables from the garden. At breakfast, gather around an outdoor table and watch the peach-gold of the rising sun bleed into the purple sky.
Days 11–16
High desert adventures in Mustang
Just beyond the northern slopes of Annapurna and the nearby Dhaukagiri mountain range, the high desert of Mustang was once part of the Tibetan Empire. The independent Buddhist Kingdom of Lo was founded here in the 14th century, and its walled city, Lo Manthang, remains remarkably intact on a plateau 3,800 metres above sea level. With a minimum of five days to explore this region – whose highest portion, Upper Mustang, is known as the ‘Forbidden Kingdom’ due to its remoteness – you can hike with a private guide to the medieval kingdom’s earthen palace and monasteries.
From your luxury hotel, on a hillside above the frontier town of Jomsom in Lower Mustang, hiking experiences include pre-breakfast expeditions by the Kali Gandaki River. Ride on hardy Mustang ponies or take out mountain bikes through shifting landscapes of forest, desert, snow-hatted peaks and glaciers. Yaks and naur, or blue sheep, can often be seen grazing on the mountain slopes. Or board a helicopter for a private flight above arid desert landscapes, Himalayan peaks and ancient rock formations that have an ethereal, sculptural quality.

Cultural immersion
Mountain monasteries
Lubra village
Marpha trek

Experience ancient landscapes and sacred rituals
On an immersive tour, your guide will take you by car and foot to visit some of the region’s mountain monasteries, or gompas, and villages. Start in the Tibetan village of Jharkot and hike through ancient orchards to the pilgrimage site of Muktinath. Here, you can bathe in the 108 fountains of Mukti Dhara – a Hindu ritual – before lunch at a monastery in Jhong.

Explore one of few remaining Bon strongholds
Today, you’ll visit a 12th-century hamlet and one of the last strongholds of Bon, a spiritual tradition that pre-dates Buddhism. Lubra is only accessible via a hike along the Panda Khola River gorge. Local guides will share stories of the village and its cave monastery, before a traditional lunch served on an ancient home’s rooftop – surrounded by dramatic peaks and valleys.

Hike to mountain lakes, painted monasteries and orchards
Hike to turquoise Dhumba Lake and Khutsab Terenga Monastery, where you’ll eat breakfast under an apricot tree. Then, trek, mountain bike or drive to Marpha, whose winding, whitewashed lanes pass stone houses and artisan craft shops. See the village’s apple orchards and ornate painted monasteries. And dine in the home of Mrs Kamala, a respected chef and civic leader.
