For families heading out to Indochina, I would always recommend a few days in Laos. Its quiet, relaxed towns feel super safe and its spectacular mountainous scenery is ripe for exploring: take a private boat trip up the Mekong River and hike to turquoise waterfalls, taking a dip in their pools to cool off and enjoying a picnic nearby.

There are many incredible places to stay in Laos. Here are some of our favourites, handpicked by our travel designers:

Vientiane

Green Park Hotel

Located in Vientiane’s largest park of Nong Chank, this intimate and peaceful boutique hotel is a pleasure to stay in if you’re exploring the capital or simply stopping over for a night. Built with charming and traditional Laos architecture, its stucco and teak houses with overhanging roofs are surrounded by tropical gardens centring in a courtyard style around the inviting pool area. The rooms are decorated in antiques yet in a typically modest Oriental style. Choose between a classic or deluxe rooms for king-sized beds and a private terrace with pool views. Executive suites are also available for those desiring extra space; at 78 square metres, these feature a dining area and a double balcony. Green Park hotel is also within walking distance of Vientiane’s highlights. The riverfront promenade and Chao Anouyoung Park is a stroll away and a perfect spot to while away the afternoon, sampling some famous Lao coffee.

Luang Prabang

Victoria Xiengthong Palace

Together with its great location in a peaceful corner on a confluence of the Nam Khan and Mekong rivers, set beside the Wat Xiengthong Temple, in the heart of Luang Prabang’s historic centre, the boutique hotel Victoria Xiengthong Palace is both ideally located and a stylish base to explore this city. Converted from one of the last residences of the Royalty of Laos, the 26 rooms and suites are steeped with history and grandeur without compromising on modern comforts. Most of them have balconies or terraces too. ‘Kitchen by the Mekong’ offers a fusion of carefully crafted Laotian and European cuisine, and meals can be taken in the gardens with atmospheric views overlooking the nearby Wat and the Mekong. Sink into the relaxing spirit of the locale with a whole menu of treatments at the hotel’s Ayu Spa.

Oudomxay Province

Sanctuary Pakbeng Lodge

Located midway between Luang Prabang and Huay Xai, the main border crossing between northern Thailand and Laos, is Sanctuary Pakbeng Lodge. Sitting on the banks of the Mekong River, it enjoys an idyllic situation. There are 20 rooms spread across two buildings. With bamboo furnishings, Hmong wall hangings and parquet rosewood floors, they have a traditional feel. All rooms face the Mekong so you can enjoy serene views from the moment you wake up. There are two restaurants at the lodge serving Thai and Laotian cuisine using ingredients from their organic kitchen garden. You can also enjoy drinks at the bar as the sun goes down and water buffalo come to bathe in the cool waters of the Mekong.

Luang Prabang

La Residence Phou Vao

With pool, garden or mountain views, La Residence Phou Vao’s 34 spacious, zen-style suites are elegantly but simply furnished with polished rosewood and fresh linens. All suites offer a double bedroom, separate living area and a very high and attentive level of service throughout. The freshwater infinity swimming pool drops dramatically over a cliff edge overlooking the valley below with gold pagodas and shrines scattered across the hillside and views across to Luang Prabang (the hotel is 2 kilometres from the city centre). Set in lush gardens guests will enjoy the fragrance of flourishing bougainvillea, papyrus and frangipani trees. Meals can be taken al fresco in the gardens lit by the glow of lanterns and candles in the evening, or dine inside in sophisticated comfort on a blend of inventive Lao and French cuisine.

Vang Vieng

Riverside Boutique Resort

The charming Riverside Boutique Resort is a luxurious sanctuary on the banks of the Nam Song River in beautiful Vang Vieng. Surrounded by lush forests and limestone mountains, the hotel boasts 34 rooms with large balconies looking out over peaceful gardens, river or mountains. The décor in the stylish rooms features exotic wood and rattan furniture, and authentic artworks by local artists that reflect the traditions of the various Lao ethnic groups. Dine at the elegant Restaurant du Crabe d’Or, which is named after one of the area’s most well-known caves. The menu offers authentic Lao dishes created with fresh, locally sourced ingredients, as well as traditional Asian and French cuisine. Enjoy sundowner cocktails and lounge music at Nam Song Bar, surrounded by artworks depicting some of Laos’ birds and orchids. Unwind with a relaxing herbal treatment at the Riverside Sala Spa, where traditional Lao therapies are combined with western techniques. The resort is just a ten-minute walk from town, and is also near to a quiet village on the western bank of the river. Head out into the countryside on foot or bicycle to explore.

Vientiane

Settha Palace

A restored colonial mansion now an elegant boutique hotel in the city centre, the Settha Palace excels in Old World charm and superb service. Built in 1932, Settha Palace has now been returned to its original family owners and restored to its former glory. High ceilings and polished rosewood flooring run throughout the rooms, which also feature king-sized poster-beds and French writing desks. For the most authentic experience of the hotel’s colonial past, pick from the suites; appointed with marble dining tables, a comfortable living room and other traditional furnishings. Located in the city centre, the hotel is perfectly placed to visit Vientiane’s cultural touchstones. The Morning Market, Mekong River and Presidential Palace are within a kilometre of Settha Palace. Thatluang and Wat Sisakhet temples and the Patuxay Monument (Vientiane’s replica of the Arc De Triomphe) are also within walking distance.

When to visit

Although this is a year-round destination, the best time to visit Laos is during the months of November to April. This period offers warm days and cool nights along with clear skies and lower humidity, making it ideal for exploring the country’s natural beauty and engaging in outdoor activities. The temperatures are generally mild, although cooler in the northern regions, making it comfortable for sightseeing and trekking.
