Luxury Zimbabwe family safaris to spot the Big Five
Safaris in Zimbabwe are internationally renowned for their exceptional guiding standards and outstanding community-based conservation – not to mention extraordinary wildlife encounters with the Big Five (leopard, lion, elephant, rhino and buffalo).
Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe’s flagship reserve, is an excellent introduction to your Zimbabwe family holiday. On game drives through its savannah, dense teak forests and Kalahari sandveld, you’ll spot lions, wild dogs, elephants and countless antelope species. Nearby is the thundering spectacle of Victoria Falls, where your expert guide will lead you to different viewpoints on both sides of the falls. You can get even closer to Mosi-oa-Tunya (the smoke that thunders) by white-water rafting or taking to the skies in a helicopter.

Family safaris in Zimbabwe often also include Mana Pools National Game Park, where the relatively flat, open terrain allows for guided walking safaris. Expeditions by canoe on the Zambezi River and its waterways are perfect for families, your guide will point out hippopotamuses and crocodiles on the islands and sandbanks that emerge during the dry season – an excellent time to visit with children. Other superb destinations in Zimbabwe’s park network include Malilangwe Wildlife Reserve, part of one of the largest bio-refuges in all of Africa, and the Matobo Hills National Park, a breathtaking landscape of massive granite formations south of Bulawayo.
Highlights
In Hwange National Park, spend a night on a star bed, a raised platform with nothing but a mosquito net between you and the wild
Discover the epic granite kopjes (rock formations) of the ancient Matobo Hills National Park
Get up close to Victoria Falls on a sunset cruise or a white-water rafting adventure
Observe herds of elephants, hippopotamus and Nile crocodiles at Mana Pools Game National Park in the Lower Zambezi Valley
Track both black and white rhinos on foot with expert rangers – an unforgettable experience in Matobo Hills National Park
Walking safaris – an unmissable conservation-focused, immersive experience – were pioneered in Zimbabwe, and my most cherished Africa safari memory was walking with an expert tracker between the massive faidherbia albida trees on the Mana floodplains, in search of wild elephants.

When to visit Zimbabwe
The ideal time for Zimbabwe safaris is during the dry season from July to October. During these months, minimal rainfall creates sparse vegetation and animals gather at the few water sources – perfect conditions for exceptional wildlife viewing.
For witnessing Victoria Falls at its most spectacular, plan your visit between April and June, when summer rains transform the Zambezi into a torrent (though you can enjoy helicopter flights, guided walks and sunset river cruises year-round, regardless of water levels).
Many families visit during the shoulder months of May to June to enjoy both excellent wildlife sightings as the dry season begins and Victoria Falls near peak flow. It’s also when temperatures aren’t too hot – a comfortable average of 23°C (73°F), with chilly mornings and evenings.
