Immerse yourself in nature on a luxury Mauritius family tour
The island nation of Mauritius, in the Indian Ocean, is 2,000 miles off the southeast coast of Africa. You can follow an epic safari adventure in Tanzania, Kenya or South Africa with a Mauritius family vacation, relaxing on palm-fringed white-sand shores and snorkelling and diving in shallow lagoons.
Pristine beaches and luxurious hotels combine with rugged volcanic peaks and dense forests. Mauritius boasts extraordinary wildlife and world-class resorts. The best hotels in Mauritius cocoon you in absolute luxury – private villas, infinity pools, spas, Michelin-starred chefs – and offer a host of water sports including parasailing, kite surfing and kayaking.
There are also unique experiences to have in Mauritius, where African, Indian, French, Creole and Chinese cultures meet. Enjoy Hindu and Tamil festivals and celebrate the Lunar New Year. Observe Maha Shivaratri, a major pilgrimage where thousands of devotees visit Grand Bassin sacred lake to honour Lord Shiva. Board private cruises and boat tours for dolphin and whale watching, meet gentle giant tortoises, or set out on foot to explore the untamed beauty of Black River Gorges National Park (once home to the now extinct dodo).

Mauritius is a wonderful multi-generational holiday destination, with calm, shallow lagoons protected by coral reefs, perfect for children to swim and paddle. Some of my favourite beaches include Flic en Flac (on the west coast – beautiful sunsets), Belle Mare (on the east coast and home to several luxury resorts) and Trou aux Biches (where you can snorkel right off the beach).

When to visit Mauritius
You can visit Mauritius year-round, but understanding the island’s seasonal patterns will help you plan the perfect family trip. The hotter, wetter months are peak season and span November to April (which also includes a cyclone risk, though not many actually make landfall); while the cooler, drier period runs from May to November.
You’ll find pleasant conditions during the May to October window, when lower humidity levels create ideal weather for exploring the island’s attractions, and it’s still warm enough to relax on its stunning beaches.
You can dive and snorkel in Mauritius year-round, as water temperatures are always warm, but November to April has the best underwater visibility.
