Overview
The luxurious and decadent Amanjiwo hotel is quite simply mesmerising.
Furthermore across the Kedu Plain, Amanjiwo looks out to Borobudur, the 9th century Buddhist sanctuary and UNESCO World Heritage site: the sole reason many come to Java.
Taking this site as inspiration, the shape of Borobudur is very much reflected in the architecture and style of Amanjiwo with its 36 suites set in two graceful crescents around a central rotunda. The suites feature high ceilings with domed roofs, outdoor sunken stone baths within a high walled garden, marble floors and a raised four poster bed. Some of the spacious sun terraces come with their own private pool offering ultimate privacy. High limestone walls give shape to the walkways that link the suites to the main building, and that winds down to the forty-metre infinity pool.
In spite of your privileged views, a private tour to Borobudur cannot be missed. Watching the shadows of the Buddha’s shift and the sky burn as the sun rises over Mount Merapi is truly a magical experience. We can arrange entry to the temple before dawn, avoiding the crowds, allowing plenty of time to reach the summit in relative peace.

Set within an authentic ampitheatre in rural Java, you can cycle around the surronding villages or take a trip out to Borobudur where a ninth century Buddhist sanctuary is found. Jacada Travel can arrange tours and excursions for you.
Both a shrine to Lord Buddha and a place for Buddhist pilgrimage, Borobudur comprises six square platforms topped by three circular platforms, and is decorated with 2,672 relief panels and 504 life-size Buddha statues, each sculpted from a single stone. The monument occupies a modest plateau and from the top gallery, beautiful views of Central Java are revealed.o lift, the sun scales the surrounding volcanoes and terraced fields, and highlights the stone reliefs and the many faces of Buddha. Glimpsing Borobudur for the first time is often a deeply felt emotional experience. Later in the day, visits can be made to appreciate the historic and cultural context of this enduring monument. Personal guides will bring to life the knowledge contained within the reliefs. Go by 'andong', the traditional horse cart used daily by villagers throughout the region.
Start cycling from Amanjiwo, stopping off to see how tofu and tempeh is still traditionally made. Continue riding to another village which specializes in making pottery and then on to Kali Tengah Village which is the starting point for your trek. The 90 minute walk leads up through a string of small settlements, farms and plantations of cloves, coffee and sweet potato. Rest in Suroloyo before climbing 280 steps up to a peak of the Menoreh Hills for an incredible view down the valley and to the mountains beyond. Cycle part of the way back on a scenic route down to Borobudur.

Overview
This eco-friendly resort takes a responsible approach to hospitability, and its restaurants make use of organically grown produce from the grounds, while its foundation and community outreach programmes seek to benefit and upskill the local villages, and protect the environment.
Positioned within the diverse natural setting of 438 acres of tropical forest, rice terraces and grasslands on a private stretch of beautiful beach, Nihi Sumba Island provides utter scenic seclusion.
All rooms are tucked amongst the trees, with huge windows and private terraces or balconies boasting expansive sea views. With 32 villas, all made from reclaimed wood by local craftsmen and furnished with unique regional artefacts, the accommodation here is exceptional.
Meanwhile, the restaurant is a fusion between Eastern and Western cuisine, with an extremely accommodating team and chef. Though dining tends to be a communal affair with couples, families and friends, the staff will happily arrange private dining in your room or at one of many private romantic locations among the grounds.
During the day, guests can try their hand at surfing along the beach or take in the Sumbanese countryside and culture by horseback. Those looking for a more relaxing pursuit can indulge in the Jungle Spa, with a massage or yoga class. There’s also fishing trips, stand-up paddleboarding and diving to be enjoyed, plus destination dining and a sea turtle hatchery.
→ Find out moreSpend some lazy days at Nihi Sumba Island. All your meals and non-alcoholic drinks are included, so relax, soak up the sun, watch the sunset then enjoy an atmospheric dinner in the restaurant or at one of the many romantic locations among the grounds. Swim in the crystal-clear waters, go mountain biking and paddle boarding or simply kick back with a yoga or meditation session. To mix things up a bit, why not try an excursion out to a traditional Sumbanese village? The choice is yours.
Get up bright and early for an open-water fishing trip. Seventeen miles off the coast of Sumba, head to NIHI Sumba Island's FAD (fish aggregating device), a raft covered with algae which attracts little fish and, in turn, bigger fish. Now it is an incredible fishing spot where you can catch mahi-mahi and wahoo, which will later be served to you at dinner as sashimi. If you like, you can also jump in and snorkel with the fish, tiny sharks, and often dolphins, too. You can try your hand at spear-fishing, too.
Relax after a morning at sea with a massage and a manicure on the terrace of your villa.
Start the day with yoga with Nihiwatu's resident expert and after breakfast head off to a local Sumbanese village to visit the locals and learn about the work of the Sumba Foundation (which receives all the profits from NIHI Sumba Island).
Head down to the legendary wave for a surfing lesson with famous pro surfer Mark Healey.
Start the day with a hike to Nihi Oka, which is about 90 minutes away. On your hike, you'll pass villagers bathing in the river, Sumbanese horses and kids on their way to school. On arrival at Nihi Oka, a beautiful clifftop spot, you'll be greeted with cold towels and a coconut cut down from the top of the palm trees by your guide. Then you'll be shown to your breakfast table under the shade of a huge tree and overlooking the surf, where you'll be served Sumbanese coffee, fresh fruit, cakes, eggs, bacon and toast. You'll then be picked up in an open-top jeep and taken back to the resort.
Today you will have the chance to learn how to stand-up paddle board.
Today you will watch a local horse race on the beach. Place your bets on the horses (the proceeds go to the Sumba Foundation) and enjoy some cocktails as the sun goes down over the surf.
