The Most Beautiful Places to Visit in Asia

Presenting our curated collection of Asia's most beautiful places, this guide moves between peaceful temples, dynamic cities and spectacular natural landscapes.

The most beautiful places in Asia include stunningly modern cities, intricate ancient temples, tropical islands and architectural marvels. They’re also replete with natural beauty, from the cherry blossoms of Japan and South Korea, to the white sand beaches of Bali and Thailand, to the lofty peaks of Bhutan and Nepal. Here are a few of our travel designers’ picks for the prettiest places across the world’s largest continent.

    1. Kyoto, Japan

Kyoto is one of the most beautiful cities in the world, full of ancient temples, shrines, palaces and houses. Head to the historic centre to travel back in time as you wander through sloping streets and traditional shops. Around every corner you’ll find lovely parks, ornate pagodas and manicured gardens. Stay at a traditional ryokan to fully immerse yourself in the local culture.

Need to know: The best times to visit Kyoto are spring (March–May) to see the famous cherry blossoms and late autumn (November–December) for brilliant autumn leaves.

    2. Halong Bay, Vietnam

Inarguably among the best places to visit in Vietnam, Halong Bay is also one of the most beautiful destinations in Asia. Its turquoise waters and towering limestone islets make for unforgettable views, which are best enjoyed from the deck of a luxury vessel like the Violet. You can also explore floating villages and take a scenic excursion to the wildlife-rich Cat Ba Island.

Need to know: Spring (March–April) and autumn (September–October) are the best times to visit Halong Bay, promising mild temperatures and clear weather.

    3. Angkor Wat, Cambodia

Of all the legendary Asian tourist attractions, Angkor Wat might just be the most impressive. This massive temple complex outside of Siem Reap is the most famous place in Cambodia and one of its prettiest sites. Featuring tiered towers, detailed carvings and more than a thousand different buildings, it’s absolutely bursting with architectural beauty and spiritual significance.

Need to know: In terms of weather, the best time to visit Angkor Wat is during the dry and cool months of November–February – although this is also the most crowded time of year.

    4. Bali, Indonesia

Bali is one of the most well-known islands in Asia, and for good reason. This tropical paradise attracts surfers and sun-seekers from across the globe to its idyllic beaches and crystal-clear waves. Inland it boasts rainforests and rice terraces, along with plenty of stunning temples and cultural sites. Stay at one of Bali’s best wellness retreats to relax and enjoy its beauty in peace.

Need to know: The best time to visit Bali and the rest of Indonesia is during the dry season from April to October.

    5. Taj Mahal, India

The Taj Mahal is among the best tourist attractions in Asia thanks to its awe-inspiring beauty and monumental scale. Located in the city of Agra in Uttar Pradesh, this white marble mausoleum features a massive dome, four minarets and Persian-inspired gardens. The reflecting pool in front of it creates an even more magical scene, especially at dawn and dusk.

Need to know: We suggest visiting the Taj Mahal in either March or September for the best combination of pleasant weather and smaller crowds.

    6. Luang Prabang, Laos

A bit farther off the beaten path than some of the other spots on this list, Luang Prabang is a tapestry of temples, teak, monasteries and markets. This historic and highly spiritual city is also surrounded by spectacular waterfalls, rivers and caves. The result is a beguiling blend of cultural heritage and natural beauty that makes it one of the prettiest spots in Southeast Asia.

Need to know: The best time to visit Laos, including Luang Prabang, is from November to April when rain is least likely.

    7. Chiang Mai, Thailand

Chiang Mai is located in northern Thailand – an area known for its cultural value and lush mountain landscapes. The city itself stands out for its incredible Buddhist temples and lively night bazaar, while the surrounding countryside offers picture-perfect views and lots of outdoor activities that allow you to soak in the scenery while getting your fill of adventure.

Need to know: We recommend visiting Chiang Mai and the rest of northern Thailand between November and February for relatively cool and dry weather.

    From our expert

One of my favourite things to recommend while travelling is to simply listen. Let the sound of a new language wash over you in everyday life. At Thailand’s floating markets, for instance, you’ll hear the calls of vendors, the chatter of customers and the sizzle of street food being prepared. It’s a beautiful way to pause and take it all in, even without understanding every word.

    8. Paro Taktsang, Bhutan

Perhaps the most picturesque place in all of Bhutan, Paro Taktsang – also known as the Tiger’s Nest – is an 8th-century Buddhist monastery perched high in the Paro Valley. The way its red and gold buildings seem to cling to the cliffside makes it a truly spellbinding sight from afar, and you can hike all the way up the mountain to see it up close as well.

Need to know: The best times to visit Paro and make the trek to the Tiger’s Nest are spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November).
