A Guide to the Best Islands in Thailand

Relax on soft white sand beaches, drift across turquoise waters, snorkel through spectacular coral reefs and discover the undeniable allure of Thailand’s best islands.
Thailand is a geographically diverse and remarkably beautiful country, with more than 1,400 islands scattered off its southern coasts. The best islands in Thailand include well-known destinations like Phuket and Koh Samui, as well as smaller isles scattered throughout the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea.
We’ve asked our travel designers for their expert insights to compile a detailed Thailand islands guide. Read on for tips on where to go, when to travel and how to make the most of your time on each one.
Choosing the right Thai island
If you’re wondering which Thai islands to visit, the answer depends on several factors. These include what pace and style of travel you’re aiming for, which activities interest you and what the rest of your itinerary looks like.
It’s also important to consider who you’re travelling with. Thailand is a phenomenal place for family trips and honeymoons alike – and your choice of destinations and activities will differ according to the type of trip you’re planning.
When looking for privacy and romantic experiences, we might recommend a secluded spot like Koh Yao Noi. On the other hand, families with children may prefer the outdoor adventures and endless options of Krabi: a coastal town with several islands within easy reach.

A word from Rachel
Exploring by junk boat or island-hopping is one of our favourite ways to experience this part of Asia from the sea. Enjoy the freedom to move between islands at a slower, more considered pace.

Andaman Coast vs Gulf of Thailand
While much of northern Thailand is landlocked, the southern end of the country consists of a long and narrow peninsula. On its east side is the Gulf of Thailand; to the west lies the Andaman Sea.
The Gulf of Thailand is where you’ll find Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Kood. The Andaman Coast is home to Phuket, Koh Yao Noi, Koh Lanta and the Phi Phi Islands. The main differences between these two areas come down to seasonality and specific experiences.
If you’re travelling between May and September, head to the Gulf of Thailand for sunny weather. In November and December, the Andaman Coast is your best bet. January through April bring pleasant weather to both sides of the country, while October can be rainy on either coast.
Islands in the Gulf of Thailand tend to offer a peaceful atmosphere and calm beaches, while the Andaman Sea islands are known for epic scenery and world-class snorkelling and diving. That said, we can help you find whatever sort of experience you’re looking for on either side of the country.

The best islands in Thailand
Thailand’s islands are wonderfully diverse in terms of their landscapes, activities and levels of development. Here are our top picks for the best Thai islands for couples, families, outdoor explorers, avid divers, wellness seekers and more.
Phuket
Andaman Sea
While Phuket is often associated with the nightlife of Patong, we recommend spending time in quieter parts of the island, where you can experience a more relaxed pace and a different side to its character.
The beaches here are excellent and numerous – it’s the country’s largest island. Stay at a luxury seaside resort like the Rosewood Phuket to enjoy unparalleled privacy and tranquillity.
Koh Yao Noi
Andaman Sea
Koh Yao Noi is one of the best Thai islands for honeymoons and romantic trips, due in large part to its overall sense of serenity and seclusion.
There are plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy, such as snorkelling nearby or traversing the island via motorbike. Come sunset, you can head to an even smaller island for a moonlit private dinner.

Koh Samui
Gulf of Thailand
If you’re planning a family vacation in Thailand, put Koh Samui at the top of your list. It’s among the best Thai islands for families, boasting a wide range of options for accommodation, dining and activities for all ages.
Take a short boat trip from Koh Samui to the Angthong Marine Park to snorkel, kayak and gaze up in awe at its limestone karsts – it’s one of our all-time favourite things to do in Thailand.
From our Asia Pacific team
Close to Koh Samui and Koh Phangan, Mu Ko Ang Thong National Park is a protected archipelago in the Gulf of Thailand.
Climb to its highest viewpoints for fascinating panoramic views.

Koh Phangan
Gulf of Thailand
A bit off the beaten path and the usual tourist itineraries, Koh Phangan is a haven of hidden coves and lush jungles. It’s equally well-suited for active adventures and wellness retreats, with a unique combination of adrenaline-filled activities and sensational spas.
The Santhiya Resort and Spa is especially ideal for wellness-focused trips, while Anantara Rasananda is a delightfully romantic choice for couples.

Koh Lanta
Andaman Sea
Featuring an irresistible mix of sandy beaches, calm waters, sensational marine life and jaw-dropping natural scenery, Koh Lanta is a fantastic choice for pretty much any type of traveller.
This island remains relatively undeveloped and therefore uncrowded. You can get acquainted with local culture in the pretty Old Town and explore small fishing villages along the coast.
Phi Phi Islands
Andaman Sea
The gorgeous Phi Phi Islands are among the best Thai islands for snorkelling and scuba diving. These six islands are surrounded by brilliant coral reefs teeming with tropical fish, sea turtles, sharks and other species.
You can easily visit this archipelago on a day trip from Phuket or Krabi, or stay overnight at Phi Phi Island Village to extend your time here.

The best time to visit Thailand’s islands
The islands in the Andaman Sea experience the best weather between November and April, with the monsoon season lasting from May to October. This coincides with the best time to visit much of mainland Thailand as well.
The islands in the Gulf of Thailand are best visited between January and September. The peak season falls in July and August. The rainy season is shorter and less intense here, with the most rainfall from October through December.
Planning your trip to Thailand
When it comes to planning a Thailand island hopping adventure, the key is to carefully select your destinations, timing, accommodation and activities. Which islands you visit, how long you spend on each one, where you stay and what you do there will determine the type of experience you have – and the array of options is vast.
We can help you design a bespoke itinerary that encapsulates your specific vision: a relaxing romantic escape, a thrilling adventure, an immersive journey in nature or a family-friendly getaway, for instance.
We can also combine different destinations to create a well-rounded, multifaceted trip. That leaves room for exploring, unwinding, sightseeing, snorkelling and anything else you’re hoping to experience in this marvellous country.

Ask the expert
We often recommend Koh Samui for first-time visitors to Thailand thanks to its accessibility and peaceful ambience. In the Andaman Sea, Koh Lanta offers a similar experience.
However, the best island to visit ultimately depends on your priorities – regardless of whether it’s your first time in Thailand or your fifth.
This depends on whether you prefer to see as many places as possible or to really dive deep into one or two locations.
Some of our favourite trips combine the mainland with just one island, whereas Thai island hopping itineraries often include stays on three or more islands, plus day trips to small islets and remote archipelagos. Either style of travel can be a great choice.
