The waters around Mataking Island are widely regarded as having some of the finest diving in the world thanks to its position on the continental shelf. Divers can hope to see Barracuda, Ribbon Eel and, in March and April, Whale Sharks.

Forty acres of palm fringed sand surrounded by crystal clear turquoise seas is the essence of a tropical castaway island, and with only one hotel this pleasing feeling of isolation is further enhanced.

A flight into Tawau and an hour-long road transfer to Semporna followed by a 45-minute speedboat ride through the Celebes Sea brings you to this paradise, which will delight both divers and non-divers alike.

What to do

  • Laze on a white sand beach and paddle in crystal clear water. Kayak around the island. Dive and snorkel for some of the most vibrant and diverse marine life in the world.
