Track wildlife, stargaze and slow down in Rwanda’s luxury lodges
A Rwanda honeymoon places you among intimate luxury lodges, striking landscapes and some of Africa’s most extraordinary wildlife. On the lush slopes of Volcanoes National Park, trek through bamboo forests to see endangered mountain gorillas. Or head to Nyungwe National Park, where chimpanzees and other primates move through the rainforest canopy.
Akagera National Park is Rwanda’s Big Five safari destination with open savannahs, lakes and wetlands that create a rich wildlife setting. Stay at Magashi Peninsula in your own private villa and spend a night in a star bed gazing up at skies bright with stars. By day, head out on expertly led game drives and boat safaris across Lake Rwanyakazinga.
We especially recommend pairing gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park with a stay at Bisate Reserve. After the awe of seeing mountain gorillas in the wild, return to volcano views and unwind with a couples’ massage at The Sanctuary, the lodge’s spa. In Nyungwe National Park, head high above the trees on the forest canopy walkway. Time it right and you can watch the sunset as birdsong and the sounds of the rainforest rise from below.
Explore Kigali on a curated private tour of the city. Some tours include time with women’s cooperatives on a fashion-focused route; others take you into one of the capital’s milk bars, where residents socialise over fresh or fermented milk. The tradition is closely tied to Rwanda’s cattle heritage and rural culture.

I particularly love seeing a gorilla family in the wild. You walk slowly through the forest to reach them, and then suddenly they’re right there in front of you. It’s such an emotional moment.

When to go to Rwanda on honeymoon
The dry months from June to September and December to February are especially good for an active honeymoon. Forest trails are generally less muddy for gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park and chimpanzee tracking in Nyungwe.
The same months also work well for safari in Akagera National Park; wildlife is often easier to spot as animals gather around water sources. The greener months, usually March to May and October to November, bring excellent birding and fuller landscapes. Expect some rain between activities.
