A wonderfully laid-back surfing town, Puerto Escondido is one of the most delightful destinations that you’ll visit on Mexico’s Pacific coast. Despite becoming an important locale for guests to Oaxaca, it’s managed to retain the charm of a fishing port and small market town.

Don’t be deceived though. Despite its careful development and relaxing feel there is plenty to do here. The waves create a major pull and of the town’s many beaches, Zicatela Beach is where to head if surfing is your raison d’être. The other beaches have gentler waves that are perfect for swimming, snorkelling and diving. Just west of the town, you’ll find a large lagoon area that’s popular for fishing and birdwatching. Opportunities for spotting local inhabitants in the form of turtles, dolphins and whales will keep families with younger children happily entertained.

Cafes, restaurants, bars and nightclubs can be found on Pérez Gazga Avenue which runs parallel to the main beach of the town, providing night owls and culture vultures with a vibrant evening scene. During the day, there’s also a great opportunity to pick up Mexican and Oaxacan handcrafts such as traditional loose-fitting clothing, tapestries and carved stone, silver and seashell jewellery.
