The Netherlands with kids: active, fun and educational
Each city in the Netherlands offers something unique. It’s a compact country – with some of Europe’s best public transport – so it’s remarkably easy to get around.
Capital city Amsterdam makes an ideal base, with its bike-friendly streets, network of canals and world-class museums (kids will love the interactive exhibits at NEMO Science Museum). You’ll be shown around Amsterdam’s neighbourhoods by a local guide, and you’ll visit the heritage village of Zaanse Schans, just north of the city, with its working windmills and traditional houses.
Nearby, on the North Sea coast, is The Hague. Here you can visit the Peace Palace and the Binnenhof, and the Scheveningen district, with Madurodam’s miniature Netherlands and its wide open, windswept beaches. Families also shouldn’t miss Rotterdam, with its bold, modern architecture and vast harbour, perfect to explore by private water taxi. From Rotterdam, you can take a day trip to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Kinderdijk.
Another unmissable stop is the medieval centre of Utrecht. Explore with an expert historian, visiting wharf cellars and the UNESCO Rietveld Schröder House, and climbing Dom Tower (the tallest church tower in the Netherlands). In the springtime, when the gardens are open, your travel designer will arrange your visit to see the seven million spring-flowering bulbs at Keukenhof.
Your luxury Netherlands family tour is tailor-made to you, at any time of year.

When to visit the Netherlands
The Netherlands enjoys a temperate climate without extremes – summers are warm and sunny, and winters cold, but rarely bitter. Whatever the season, pack layers and waterproofs.
Spring (mid-March to mid-May) is when tulips burst into bloom, with mid-April the absolute peak of colour at Keukenhof, but the long days of summer see the biggest influx of visitors, when temperatures are pleasant for cycling and beach trips.
Autumn and winter reveal a quieter, more authentic Netherlands. Temperatures drop and skies turn grey, with brightly coloured lights lining sweet-smelling Christmas markets and you’ll have museums and galleries largely to yourself.
