Ancient vinicultural traditions and Georgia wine

In the country of Georgia you have the opportunity to embark on an extraordinary food and wine experience, combining an 8,000-year wine-making tradition with a distinctive cuisine that reflects its position at the crossroads of Europe and Asia.

Tbilisi, Georgia’s vibrant capital, serves as your culinary base. You’ll discover wine bars and traditional restaurants on the cobblestone streets of the Old Tbilisi district and explore covered markets to sample Georgian wines alongside traditional foods like khinkali (soup dumplings), khachapuri (cheese-filled bread) and churchkhela (a kind of chocolate bar made from nuts and grape juice). Some Tbilisi restaurants honour the supra tradition of Georgia – elaborate feasts hosted by a tamada (toastmaster) – while others offer fine dining.

But the cradle of Georgian wine-making is to the east, in Kakheti, which will be a highlight of your wine tour of Georgia. Protected by the Caucasus Mountains and with a unique ‘cinnamonic’ soil (sandy, reddish-coloured, calcareous clay), this fertile region produces the majority of the country’s wine grapes and is home to the UNESCO-recognised qvevri wine-making method, responsible for Georgia’s renowned orange (or amber) wine.

Your expert travel designer will plan you a bespoke culinary itinerary with all the best cellar doors and family-run wineries, and excursions to the dramatic mountain scenery of Kazbegi National Park in the north, or to the Black Sea coast in the west. You’ll discover a country with one of the oldest wine-making traditions in the world, and you’ll visit fortresses, monasteries and the hearths and homes of local families.
