The Top Forts and Palaces to Visit in India

Explore our curated guide showcasing how India's top palaces have been transformed into spectacular hotels and historic sites.

There are all kinds of incredible forts, palaces and castles in India, from the bustling streets of Delhi and Mumbai to the most remote reaches of rural Rajasthan. Some are several centuries old; others served as royal residences only a few decades ago; and a few have been transformed into luxurious hotels where you can spend your nights surrounded by history.

Considering the fact that India boasts hundreds – if not thousands – of these historic structures, choosing which ones to visit is far from simple. To help narrow down the list, we’ve asked our travel designers to select some of their all-time favourite Indian forts and palaces to visit.

    1. Red Fort, Delhi

Delhi’s Red Fort is an enduring symbol of the city. Located in Old Delhi, it’s an imposing red sandstone structure that was once home to Mughal emperors. The fort was built in the 17th century under the reign of Shah Jahan (who also commissioned the Taj Mahal). You can also visit Salimgarh Fort within the same complex, which is nearly 100 years older than the Red Fort.

    From our experts

For me, what makes a trip to India so special is its incredible variety. A key part of my planning is to time visits just right, so you can see these amazing places when they’re at their most beautiful.

For example, one of the best times to visit the Taj Mahal is at sunrise or sunset, when there are fewer visitors and it’s bathed in a beautiful, soft golden light.

    2. Rambagh Palace, Jaipur

Located in Jaipur, Rambagh Palace was originally built in 1835, and subsequently expanded and converted into a fabulous heritage hotel. A stay at Taj Rambagh Palace is a chance to immerse yourself in one of the top palaces in India, complete with extensive gardens, antique decor and atmospheric dining spaces ranging from a grand ballroom to a restored train car.

    3. Agra Fort, Uttar Pradesh

Agra is best known as the site of the iconic Taj Mahal, but it’s also home to the lesser-known Agra Fort, which is a worthwhile destination in its own right. This structure dates back to the 16th century and is sometimes also called the Red Fort (not to be confused with the one in Delhi). It’s a fine example of Mughal architecture featuring intricate carvings and marble inlay.

    4. Mysore Palace, Karnataka

A relatively new addition to the long list of famous Indian palaces, Mysore Palace is a mix of various architectural influences, which makes it all the more interesting to explore. One of the top landmarks to visit in India, it’s renowned for beautiful details like stained glass and ivory inlay. You’ll find it a few hours southwest of Bangalore, the capital of the state of Karnataka.

    5. Falaknuma Palace, Hyderabad

Dating back to the late 19th century, Falaknuma Palace was originally home to the Prime Minister of Hyderabad before becoming a royal guesthouse. Today it houses the elegant Taj Falaknuma Palace hotel, boasting 60 opulent rooms and suites and an exceptional spa inspired by traditional healing practices – not to mention privileged views of the sprawling city below it.

    6. Golconda Fort, Hyderabad

Located just outside Hyderabad, Golconda Fort has its origins in the 11th century and the Kakatiya dynasty, and was later occupied by the Qutb Shahi dynasty. Originally made from mud walls and built on a foundation of natural boulders, the fort has incredible acoustics that allowed its early inhabitants to communicate with and signal to one another throughout the complex.

    7. Mehrangarh Fort, Jodhpur

Mehrangarh Fort sits on a hill overlooking Jodhpur. It was built by the city’s founder, Rao Jodha, in the 15th century and significantly expanded in the 17th century. Today it features seven magnificent gates and several beautiful palaces within its walls. We can arrange a private tour of the fort’s museum and its royal treasures at sunset, when it’s otherwise closed to the public.

    8. Amber Fort, Rajasthan

Amber Fort (also known as Amer Fort or Amber Palace) is one of the main attractions in Rajasthan. It’s set atop a hill in the small town of Amer, about a 30-minute drive from Jaipur, and is wonderfully well preserved. Explore its myriad courtyards, temples and halls for a glimpse into Rajput history and architecture – we especially love the mirrored Jai Mandir (Hall of Victory).

    9. Chittorgarh Fort, Rajasthan

Covering nearly 700 acres in southern Rajasthan, Chittorgarh is among the largest forts in India. Its name literally translates to ‘Chittor Fort’ and it’s located in the eponymous city. Built during the Mori Kingdom in the 7th century, it’s also the oldest fort on this list. Within it you’ll find numerous palaces, temples, towers and the Gaumukh Reservoir, backed by panoramic views.

    10. City Palace, Udaipur

Udaipur is one of the most romantic cities in the world, and the City Palace is certainly a must-visit destination for all sorts of reasons. This ornate lakeside complex is a relic of the Mewar dynasty with its roots in the 16th century. It’s famous for its intricate architecture, spectacular mosaics, tiled courtyards and lovely gardens. We suggest staying at the nearby Taj Lake Palace, one of the world’s most beautiful hotels.
