Hotel Fermata

Set directly on Santa Teresa Beach, Hotel Fermata is right in front of one of Costa Rica’s most consistent surf breaks. Along a stretch of the Nicoya Peninsula’s golden sand, its standalone casitas, villas and traditional rooms are decorated in a style that matches the laid-back surfing atmosphere, with breezy linen textiles, natural colour schemes, stone, tile and light wood. Many of the casitas and villas have direct access to the sand, so you can walk straight out to swim or catch an early-morning surf lesson with the Fermata’s surf school, the Chorotegas.

The beachfront setting naturally centres the experience around the ocean. Surf lessons are available for any experience level, or rent a board from the hotel and head out independently to explore nearby breaks along the coast. Fermata is also a very family-friendly hotel, with flexible room layouts, easy beach access, surf lessons for kids and the option to book private nanny services for children.

Beyond the waves, Fermata offers yoga sessions and massage treatments, and you’re within walking distance of Santa Theresa’s boutiques and chilled-out cafes. Fermata Beach House serves as a surfers’ social hub offering juices, a bar and snacks, as well as a chill place to relax on loungers or in the shade of palm fronds throughout the day. The restaurant, Fermata Kitchen, is led by Chef Olivier Palazzo, with a Mediterranean menu focused on locally sourced ingredients, Costa Rican flavours and seafood.
