Days 1–3

Quaint Fort Cochin

Nestled on the northwest tip of Cochin’s peninsula, Fort Cochin is a quaint coastal region with strong links to its colonial history. The Western Ghats sit to the west while the Arabian Sea flows out from the east, making this a beautiful and relaxing place to spend a few days. Fort Cochin has long been a hub for trade. Arabian and Chinese traders flocked here for pepper, cinnamon, cardamon and cloves which are still known for their quality today. This is a bustling town, but it also has a very relaxed side to it with locals and visitors taking to the beach to enjoy the water lapping at their feet.

Fort Cochin on two wheels

Embark on a bicycle tour of the city, starting at St. Francis Church and pedaling into the vibrant spice trading hub of Bazaar Road. As you ride through old streets lined with fragrant spice warehouses and colourful shops, take in the aromatic scents of ginger, cardamom, cumin, turmeric, and cloves. Continue your journey to Jew Town, where you can pause to admire the frescoes of the Dutch Palace. In the Hindu quarter, discover temples and bustling vegetable and fruit markets. The tour then takes you along Kochi’s scenic waterfront, with a stop at a local laundry to observe the dhobis in action, before concluding your adventure at the iconic Chinese fishing nets.

Kathakali dance performance

In the evening you’ll enjoy a short performance of Kathakali, a classical dance form that has its origins in Theyyam, a ritual tribal dance of north Kerala, and Kalaripayattu the martial arts which goes back 1000 years. The dancers use dramatic costumes and exaggerated facial make up, and to accompaniment of drums and cymbals, use stylized movements to relate episodes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana.

Tripunithura palace visit

Drive 45 minutes to visit the Tripunithura palace where you’ll discover the story of the Cochin Royal Family. You’ll explore the family’s origins, and the rise and fall in their fortunes under the Europeans before their eventual union with India. Learn about their role in developing the modern city. At the end of the trail, you will have a short interaction with present day members of the family.

Days 3–5

Explore the backwaters

Drive to Alleppy and then take a houseboat cruise. The backwaters of Kerala have given the area the sobriquet ‘God’s Own Country’. As you meander through these on your houseboat you’ll drift into a timeless land replete with picture-postcard towns and ancient trading posts. A network of lakes, rivers and canals fringe the coast of Kerala. These backwaters, while a great inland thoroughfare on water, offer an alternative lifestyle. You will cruise through the narrow waterways from where you will see local people going about their daily chores of washing, fishing and bathing in the backwaters. It is a great way to observe the rural lives from close quarters.

Days 5–7

Hills of Thekkady

Thekkady, nestled in the lush hills of Kerala, is a captivating destination known for its rich biodiversity and serene landscapes. The heart of Thekkady is the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, a vast expanse of tropical forest surrounding a picturesque lake. Here, visitors can embark on boat safaris to spot elephants, tigers, and a variety of exotic bird species in their natural habitat. Thekkady’s spice plantations add to its charm,With its cool climate, misty hills, and tranquil ambiance, Thekkady is a haven for nature lovers and those seeking a peaceful retreat in the lap of nature.

Periyar National Park visit

Periyar National Park is one of the homes of the Asian elephant. Set around the massive Lake Periyar, stretching over hills and valleys, the picturesque park was declared a Project Tiger Reserve in 1978. The lake here attracts an incredible amount of wildlife and birds. See herds of elephants and large groups of deer and wild boar. Among the other inhabitants of the park are wild dogs and monkeys.

Discover the story of spice

A major attraction in Thekkady is the spice plantations. Set in verdant surroundings, these spice plantations are a treat to walk through and discover how spices like cardamom, black pepper, clove, vanilla, asafetida, cinnamon, nutmeg etc are grown. You will also get a chance to see plantations of coffee, which is the popular beverage of South India.

Jungle walk and bamboo rafting

Head out for shared jungle walk and bamboo rafting experience. You’ll trek through a variety of habitats before getting into bamboo rafts. The forests are rich in bird life and arboreal animals like giant squirrel and Nilgiri langur. Along the way you might also spot elephants and gaurs.

Days 7–9

Misty Munnar

In the morning you’ll be driven 3.5 hours up to the cool hills of Munnar. Set on the seaward slope of the Western Ghats, Munnar is the center of Kerala’s tea industry. The quiet town and its environs are blanketed by lush tea plantations and remnants of rainforest. Discover misty mountains, thick forests, hills covered in a quilt of tea plantations, deep valleys and sparkling streams and waterfalls. Munnar has a beauty and a charm that is unsurpassed in any southern hill station. It is a place where you awake to birdsong and surreal beauty.

Visit a tea plantation

Go on a hike to the highest tea growing estate in the world. You will be taken through some of the luscious tea plantations, scenic valleys and majestic mountains. The trip starts with a Jeep drive along the main road through Kannan Devan and Lockhart tea plantations. The rest of the journey continues onto to an off-road track. The trek lasts for 2 to 3 hours to reach the top through tea plantations. On a clear day, you can see the lofty mountains that are part of the Western Ghats. Once at the summit, then you can continue to walk along the ridge and descend downhill to visit the tea factory to learn about the tea making process. After a picnic lunch, you have the option to trek or drive back. While this is a full day programme, the length will be decided by the routes you choose to follow. Later you will also visit the factory and museum to see how tea is picked, processed and shipped.

Days 9–14

Around Tamil Nadu

This vibrant state is known for its rich cultural heritage, magnificent temples, and lush landscapes. You’ll spend the next six days exploring the countryside and learning why its often called the ‘Land of Temples. There are thousands of intricately designed temples here, adorned with towers and detailed stone carvings – and you’ll get to visit a few of them on your travels. While here, you’ll stay at a few of our favourite hotels in the region and get a taste for Tamil Nadu’s art, cuisine and culture.

Heart of Madurai

Evening Shiva ceremony

As the sun sets over Madurai, witness a unique night ceremony as the image of Shiva is carried from his shrine to join his consort in a bed chamber in another part of Meenakshi Temple. The procession is accompanied by religious prayer and temple music. Each morning Shiva’s idol is returned to his shrine. You may also have time to browse through a local market.

Gandhi Museum visit

Make time for a visit to the Gandhi Museum in Madurai which celebrates the life of Mahatma Gandhi. Afterwards, you will be taken for a walk through the bustling markets of Madurai getting a feel for life in this Tamil Nadu town.

Meenakshi Temple tour

Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple, with which Madurai is synonymous, is dedicated to Lord Shiva and his consort Meenakshi. Fourteen magnificent gopurams (ornamental towers at the gates) rise above the complex. These profusely sculptured and painted gopurams are typical to the Dravidian architecture that you will see here. The temple forms the heart and lifeline of the 2500 year old city of Madurai.

Feel the rhythm

Visit a Potters Village

Visit the Potters’ Village in Madurai, and watch mud go from the mundane to the sublime. Listen to the stories of creators – both mortal and immortal. You’ll discover why earthen horses are offered to gods here, whether men become gods sometimes, and if gods sometimes masquerade as common people. These stories add a new layer to your understanding and appreciation of Madurai.

Tea plantation trekking

Spend some time walking through  the plantations, exploring the estate paths beneath flowering trees. You can also enjoy a guided trek of three hours, which takes you to the higher ridges with magical, long views. Or take a shorter guided walk to the estate and farm. A delicious picnic lunch will be arranged for longer walks.

Bharatnatyam dance demonstration

In the evening enjoy a dance demonstration of the classical Bharatnatyam dance. This dance encompasses music, rhythm and expressional dance or abhinaya and strictly adheres to the Natyashastra (the scripture of classical Indian dance).

Visit Darasuram temple

Darasuram temple, constructed by Rajaraja Chola II (1146-63), is a superb example of Chola architecture with its towering vimana. The sanctum is in the form of a chariot, while the front mandapam is in the form of a chariot drawn by horses. The remarkable structures depict stories from epics and Hindu mythology. This temple is a recognised UNESCO World Heritage monument.

Thanjavur weavers and artists

Thanjavur village of weavers who spin the lustrous silk textile used to dress gods and goddesses during festivals, and beloved of brides. You’ll also visit an artist’s studio where you can watch them create Thanjavur paintings. Using traditional techniques, a blank piece of board is laboriously transformed into  bejeweled, colourful creations.

Meet master sculptors and instrument makers

Spend some time with master sculptors who will demonstrate the procedures involved in cire perdue, bell making and musical instrument veena making. You’ll be  shown how to make a bronze sculpture from the initial wax-process to the final bronze sculpture. A demonstration on the intricate process involved in the making of a bell, and a demo of how to make the musical instrument veena.

Days 14–16

Pretty Pondicherry

Also known as Puducherry, Pondicherry is a charming coastal town known for its unique blend of French colonial heritage and Indian culture. The French Quarter, also known as White Town, is dotted with pastel-colored villas, bougainvillea-covered walls, and chic cafes, offering a distinctly European ambiance. Pondicherry’s serene beaches provide a tranquil escape, and the town’s cuisine is a delightful mix of French and South Indian flavors, with bakeries serving croissants alongside local Tamil delicacies.

Walking tour of Pondicherry

Head out on a walking tour of Pondicherry seeing the French influence in the white town as you explore. Chic streets, whitewashed residences and ornamental gardens give it a Mediterranean feel. Walk along the seemingly endless beach and visit Aurobindo Ashram. Here you’ll learn about the Eastern-philosophy. Then end the tour with a visit to the Ganesh temple.

Auroville ashram

While in Pondicherry, you’ll have the option to visit Auroville, which was developed as a center for universal religion around the Indian yogi and spiritual leader Sri Aurobindo. The ashram, which combines the spiritual tenets of yoga and modern science, is one of the most popular and affluent ashrams in India.

Days 16–18

Vibrant Chennai

Chennai, the capital of Tamil Nadu, is known for its vibrant culture, historical landmarks, and thriving arts scene. As one of India’s major urban centers, Chennai seamlessly blends the old with the new, where ancient temples and colonial-era architecture stand alongside modern skyscrapers and shopping malls. The city is famous for its Marina Beach, one of the longest urban beaches in the world, where locals and visitors alike gather to enjoy the sea breeze and stunning sunsets. Chennai is also a hub for classical Indian music and dance, particularly the Carnatic music and Bharatanatyam dance forms, with numerous cultural festivals and performances held throughout the year.

Shore Temples

In the morning you’ll be driven four hours to Chennai and if you are interested you can visit the Shore Temples at Mahablipuram, one of history’s intriguing enigmas. It was a flourishing port of the Pallava rulers who chiselled in stone a fabulous museum of sculptures under the open sky. This seaside town is home to many shrines and huge sculptures cut out of rocks more than 1200 years ago. The carvings – depicting demons, gods and animals in battle as well as mythological episodes – are truly poems in stone.

Channai tour and Kapaleeshwar Temple

Drive through the bustling city of Chennai visiting Fort St George, built by the East India Company in 1653, St. Mary’s Church, the oldest Anglican Church in the country. You will visit the National Art Gallery and the Kapaleeshwar Temple – this ancient Shiva temple is a masterpiece in Dravidian architecture. The Parthasarthy Temple built in the 8th century by the Pallavas is devoted to Lord Krishna and houses the Five Avtars of Vishnu (of which Krishna was one).

Walking tour through Mylapore

Take an easy and  enjoyable walk through Mylapore, a bustling neighborhood in the heart of the Chennai that pre dates the city by 2000 years. This walk comes packed with a bundle of stories – of local life, gods and demons, ancient custom and symbolism. Some amusing, some baffling and some that might just help you make sense of the sights around you.
