Discover rich heritage, culinary delights and spectacular scenery on the Island of Beauty

Rising from the azure swell of the Mediterranean, the rugged coastline of Corsica resembles an imposing fortress. Within its rocky walls are a scenic patchwork of natural landscapes that have rightfully earned it the nickname ‘Island of Beauty’. Perhaps most known as the birthplace of France’s most infamous leader, Napoleon, Corsica’s spectacular scenery, including over 1,000 kilometres of golden beaches, towering mountain ridges and ancient forests make it an unforgettable destination in its own right.

Start in the capital of Ajaccio, a port city where picturesque, palm-lined streets lead to enthralling historical sites, including Napoleon’s birthplace of Maison Bonaparte and the 16th century Notre Dame cathedral. A wander along the seafront is rewarded with beautiful sea views and mouthwatering seafood, best enjoyed with local wines. Charcuterie and chestnuts also feature heavily, creating a distinct sense of regional gastronomy you can sample at local markets.

In the south of the island, Bonifacio is an essential stop during luxury travel to Corsica, its imposing clifftop citadel perched across dramatic limestone cliffs. Its narrow streets and historic architecture, including Genoese fortifications and the legendary Escalier du Roi d’Aragon, a sea view staircase carved into the cliffs, have long captured the imaginations of travellers. Take a boat tour to explore the city’s caves and cliffs from the water, or immerse yourself in the nearby Lavezzi Archipelago, a protected area home to mesmerising snorkelling spots.

Beyond its towns and cities, Corsica is home to exceptional hiking, showcasing a variety of rewarding yet beautiful treks, including the renowned GR20 route. One of Europe’s most challenging hikes, it comprises 180 kilometres of rocky terrain and pastoral vistas. If you’re after some more gentle walks, the island’s Scandola Nature Reserve or the Calanques de Piana are just as captivating.

    When to visit

The best time to visit Corsica is from May to September. These warmer months feature long, sunny days with warm temperatures – on average you can expect daytime temperatures in August to reach around 28°C (84°F).

For hiking, we recommend visiting during the shoulder months of May and September to October for cooler yet pleasant conditions on the trails. The winter months of November to March can mean some of the trails are impassable due to snow and bad weather.
