    Lopud 1483

A restored monastery retreat in Croatia

Private 15th-century villa for seclusion, art and history in the Elaphiti Islands

Lopud 1483 occupies a fortified Franciscan monastery built in 1483 on the island of Lopud, a completely car-free island in the Elaphiti archipelago near Dubrovnik. The complex was restored over many years by art collector Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza, preserving the original Croatian stone architecture while introducing contemporary art and design throughout the property. Historic elements remain in cloistered courtyards, thick limestone walls, inscriptions and fragments from the monastery’s earlier life.

The 13 original monk cells have been combined into five large suites, each with views either toward the Adriatic or the gardens. Interiors balance simplicity with carefully chosen furnishings and artwork from the Thyssen-Bornemisza collection. Shared spaces include the cloister courtyard, the refectory and a former kitchen centred on a traditional bread oven. The terraces and gardens are planted with Mediterranean herbs, and fruit trees surround the walls, creating tranquil spots for dining, reading or gathering at sunset.

Meals are prepared by a private chef using seasonal ingredients and served in the historic dining room or outside overlooking the sea. There is a ‘Sacred Garden’ designed for reflection and meditation and options for yoga or private wellness treatments. Lopud’s sandy Šunj Beach is a short walk away, and you can opt for a boat or private yacht excursion to explore nearby islands and the Dubrovnik coastline. There’s also a terrace bar perfect for stargazing with drinks, an open-air cinema and the option for a helicopter tour over the Adriatic.

    Korcula

    Lesic Dimitri Palace

Described as a Mediterranean medieval masterpiece, the Lesic Dimitri Palace is a charming boutique hotel occupying an 18th century bishop’s palace in the heart of historic Korcula. It’s also a Relais and Chateaux property, meaning that you can be guaranteed exquisite service and a highly personalised, luxury stay.

Composed of the main palace and five adjacent cottages, Lesic Dimitri Palace has been designed to echo Marco Polo’s travels on the Silk Road. Sublimely imagined by Thai designer Attauyut Piravinich, the Palace’s five residences are individually decorated in the style of a particular region. Each one-to-three-bedroom residence is self-contained and equipped with a fully-fitted kitchen, plasma screens with satellite TV in every room, an iPod dock, and iPads, board games, and DVDs for guests to borrow. Enjoy meals overlooking the sparkling Adriatic and the Korcula archipelago at the terrace hotel and bar, and take some time to relax at the spa where a team of Thai therapists offer a treatment list with influences from the Silk Road, Thailand, and the Mediterranean.

Venture outside, and you’ll find that you’re steps from Marco Polo’s house and the old cathedral within the Old Town wall. The stone-paved Zakrjan Beach is also just a short stroll, while a pebbly beach can be found nearby the Old Town and the charming sandy beach in Lumbarda Village is within striking distance. Lesic Dimitri Palace also has a private yacht that can be rented per hour or per day to take you to the numerous coves and beaches of Korcula Island and Peljesac Peninsula.
