Music and mountains on your luxury Austria family tour
Begin your family trip to Austria in the city of Salzburg, birthplace of Mozart, and home to magnificent baroque architecture and the medieval Hohensalzburg Fortress. Stay in an elegant family suite at Hotel Sacher on the Salzach River, and explore the compact UNESCO old town and 17th century Mirabell Palace and Gardens (a filming location for the The Sound of Music).
From Salzburg, venture east into the rugged peaks of the breathtaking Austrian Lakes (Salzkammergut) region. Take short hikes with mesmerising views of the Fuschl, Wolfgang and Hallstatt lakes, and visit picture-postcard lakeside Hallstatt village – like something from a Disney movie – where families can explore the world’s oldest salt mine and the hauntingly beautiful charnel house (bone house) in St. Michael’s Chapel.
In Vienna, on the banks of the Danube, east of the lakes visit the Schönbrunn Palace and its expansive gardens, Imperial Palace (Hofburg) and the soaring St. Stephen’s Cathedral. Vienna’s famous Spanish Riding School puts on a show that children will love, along with Vienna Prater, with its nostalgic amusement park and giant ferris wheel, and vast green parkland and meadows.
In the far west of Austria, cable cars will whisk you up into the high mountains of the stunning Tyrol region for summer hiking and winter snow activities. Visit Innsbruck to see the Kaiserliche Hofburg (Imperial Palace) and admire the opulent ‘Golden Roof’ glittering brightly in the old town.
