Botanical art gallery tour
Visit the botanical art gallery and learn more about the diverse fynbos you can see if you head out on walks or hikes. What makes these artworks even more distinctive is the inclusion of insects, pollinators and other creatures associated with the flora.

Land-based whale watching
Grootbos is ideally positioned to offer you close encounters with southern right whales. They migrate every year from the icy Antarctic to the warm, sheltered bays to mate, calve and raise their young. Take a walk on the cliffs and pathways of De Kelders as your guide takes you to all the best viewing spots. See the waves frothing and listen to the slap of the whale’s gigantic tails, plus their breaching and spy-hopping, as they come within metres of the shoreline.

And when it comes to wildlife, the river setting makes for excellent viewing opportunities. Head out on Kunene River safaris, scanning the waters and banks for wildlife like crocodiles, oryx and Hartmann’s zebras as well as other reptiles and birdlife.

Meet with the Himba people
Take some time to connect with one of Africa’s last semi-nomadic communities, the Himba people. Together with your local guide, you will get a glimpse of their way of life which is deeply intertwined with the land and removed from modern comforts. Through this, you’re gifted the opportunity to reflect on your own values and gain a deeper insight into an enduring heritage.

Slow down and discover the intricate details of the desert ecosystem on a guided walking safari. Swap your vehicle for ancient wildlife paths alongside your professional guides. Focus on the smaller marvels often missed from a game drive – from insects and unique flora to birds and bees. When you inevitably encounter larger wildlife, the experience of being on foot is remarkable.

Fireside stargazing and stories
Fill the night here with incredible stargazing and sharing stories around the camp fire. The fire pit at Wilderness Serra Cafema is the social heart of the camp. Situated in a lower-level, oval seating area, this space overlooks the river and is perfectly positioned for taking in the vast night skies.
