Marrakesh is a fantastic starting point for your family trip to Morocco. Known for its labyrinthine medina and enormous central square, the ‘Red City’ is packed with opportunities for family fun. 

Visit Jemaa el-Fnaa in the evening to try traditional food and watch street performers, or embark on a treasure hunt in the nearby Souk Semmarine. We also suggest wandering through the whimsical Jardin Majorelle with its colourful buildings and flourishing plant life.

While many travellers associate Morocco with the Sahara Desert, we often recommend the Agafay Desert for families instead. Located much closer to Marrakesh, this rocky desert is full of luxurious tented camps and opportunities for adventure.

Older kids and teenagers can traverse the desert on quad bikes or buggies, and the whole family will enjoy refreshing pools, sunset dinners and traditional performances back at camp.

For families hoping to escape city life, the Atlas Mountains promise a beguiling combination of natural beauty and cultural immersion. Here you can visit local villages, hike through peaks and valleys, learn about Berber traditions and participate in local crafts and cooking workshops.

This destination can be easily adapted to varying ages and interests, with plenty of gentle activities for young children as well as challenging treks for teenagers and adults.

Set on the coast south of Casablanca, Essaouira is an ideal destination for families who prefer the sea to the city. The main beach, Plage d’Essaouira, boasts a broad expanse of sand where you can soak up the sun, watch blue fishing vessels glide by and enjoy sunset boat trips. 

For a more active experience you can also head out on hikes through nearby forests, sign up for kid-friendly surf lessons or simply explore the port town’s historic streets.

Chefchaouen is Morocco’s renowned ‘Blue City’, so named for its abundance of brightly painted buildings that will awaken the imagination of children and adults alike. Its streets are calm and pedestrian-friendly, making it delightfully easy to navigate on foot with your family.

While in town you can take a pastry-making class, attend a traditional weaving workshop or venture into the Rif Mountains to see the picturesque waterfall of Ras El Maa.

In contrast to our favourite Sahara desert camps for families, Inara Camp promises a fantastic family-friendly getaway in the Agafay Desert. It’s especially ideal for active families and teenagers, offering adventurous activities such as quad bike excursions. 

Children – and adults – of all ages can cool off in the Desert Lagoon swimming pool and enjoy pottery workshops, stargazing sessions and sunset views over the nearby canyons.

There’s no better place for a luxury Atlas Mountains retreat with your family than Kasbah Tamadot. This opulent estate has its own mules, camels and donkeys for children to interact with, as well as outdoor cinema nights and hands-on Berber cooking classes. 

If you’re visiting with older kids, we highly recommend staying in one of the hotel’s elegant Berber Tents for an especially luxurious take on camping.

The Selman Marrakech is a must-visit for animal enthusiasts – and horse lovers in particular. The hotel has its own stable of award-winning Arabian horses, which play a starring role in many of its signature experiences. 

Kids can visit the stables, go on pony rides and cruise around in horse-drawn carriages. There’s also an 80-metre-long swimming pool, arts and crafts classes and plenty of other fun to be had.

Just up the coast from Essaouira, Oualidia is another excellent coastal destination for families. Stay at La Sultana Oualidia for direct access to a gentle lagoon where little ones can safely swim and splash around in the shallows.
