    Janeiro Hotel

Oceanfront style on Rio’s Leblon Beach
A dining room with rattan chairs and tables under a wooden ceiling and with a white floor. In the background is a long picture window looking out over some greenery and in the distance, the blue sea, some islands and the blue sky.

A boutique beach hotel curated by Brazilian visual artist Oskar Metsavaht

Facing Rio’s Leblon Beach, Janeiro Hotel was conceived by Oskar Metsavaht, the Brazilian visual artist and founder of fashion label Osklen. His vision shapes the aesthetic throughout the property: calm interiors and a pared-back, minimalist design put the spotlight on Rio’s natural beauty. Each of the 51 rooms has picture windows that frame the Atlantic across to Ipanema and Arpoador, with Dois Irmãos Mountain and the famed Cristo Redentor statue rising in the distance. Natural light floods the spaces, and Metsavaht’s influence is evident in the natural textures and muted tones, which give space to the organic beauty of Rio’s urban coastline.

Dining includes Janeiro Restaurant and Cedilha, where world cuisines are interpreted with seasonal ingredients. At Varanda on the 19th floor, you can start the day with a private sunrise breakfast or end it with a three-course evening meal under moonlight. The rooftop infinity pool offers swims above the sand with views of Leblon and Ipanema beaches, while a one-room ‘mini-spa’ offers restorative individual treatments. For a different rhythm, you can board the 54-foot Sea of Janeiro sailboat and explore the Cagarras Islands or Niterói.

The hotel has adopted the dunes in front of Leblon Beach through the Restinga Project, a public-private partnership that aims to restore the original coastal sand forest ecosystem, helping to balance the climate, prevent erosion and preserve stunning views for guests.

    Cristalino Jungle Lodge

Truly one of the best lodges to explore the natural world of Brazil’s Amazon rainforest – as confirmed by the National Geographic Traveller, who named it one of the best hotels in all the country – the Cristalino is a spectacular, very comfortable and conscientiously designed jungle lodge for serious nature lovers.

Set in its own 28,167-hectare private reserve and only reachable by boat, the lodge also manages to combine several different accommodation options for every type of traveller. Families will find the two-bedroom bungalows very comfortable, and couples looking for extra privacy will find the ‘special bungalows’ ideal. Things like solar-powered hot water and biological waste treatment keep the property sustainable with minimum impact on the precious environment around you. Private verandas and outdoor showers come as standard in all category of rooms, and upper-tier options feature private gardens and L’Occitane products.

The staff here look after every individual guest beautifully, as do the lodge’s team of naturalist guides and wildlife experts who lead you on your daily expeditions. Choose from a scheduled programme of diverse activities depending on your length of stay, or pick and choose what you like, mixed in with the right balance of relaxation.

Combining remoteness with an elegant style of comfort, expert nature activities and outdoors adventure, and fantastic facilities for its position, Cristalino is without a doubt one of our favorites.
