Keralan Backwaters, India
Spice Routes Cruise Boat
Comfortably luxurious houseboat
Explore Kerala’s Backwaters on a cruise aboard a comfortably luxurious houseboat. The six air-conditioned vessels, each named after various spices can sleep between two and ten guests. Only a single booking is assigned to a boat, so you’ll have the common lounge area, dining room and deck all to yourselves. Enjoy the opportunity to explore the evocative backwaters at your own pace.
The houseboats are designed using traditional thatched roofs, with modern interiors, en-suite bathrooms and luxury products. The experience includes premium dining as well as the opportunity to head ashore for exploring and a variety of experiences in villages along the way. You can go on canoe rides, learn how to remove the husks of coconuts, make your own coconut chutney and explore the paddy fields on foot or by bicycle.
The dining experience is one of the most memorable parts of the journey. Fresh river fish are in abundance in these waters, and from time to time the chef himself throws a line to catch something fresh for dinner. Otherwise, fresh fish, lobsters and mussels are bought from the fishermen along the canals. The veggies and fruits you’ll find on your plate are sourced from local villages.
All biodegradable waste from the houseboats is saved and converted into compost which is then used on a papaya farm. Single plastic usage has been banned on the Spice Routes houseboats and farms since 2016.
