Enjoy beautiful coastlines, gentle seas, ancient cultural sites and spectacular hotels on our favourite family-friendly Greek islands. Highlights include sampling local olive oil and honey in Rhodes, taking in the volcanic landscapes of Milos and staying in private villas in Santorini.

Greece is among the most sought-after spots for family trips in Europe, boasting a brilliant combination of historical landmarks, delicious cuisine and sensational scenery. To complement all of this with seaside adventures and coastal fun, the Greek islands are the place to be.

We’ve asked our travel designers to select the best Greek islands for families. Here’s their expert advice on where to go, where to stay and what to do for multi-generational families and children of all ages.

How we choose the best Greek islands for families

Planning the perfect family trip to Greece involves prioritising various elements and experiences. Is your family more interested in beaches or history? Would you prefer to stay in one or two spots or go island hopping to see as many places as possible?

Our choices below are based on all of these aspects, with specific suggestions for certain interests. Each island boasts fantastic beaches for sunbathing and swimming, family-friendly luxury accommodation and a wealth of culture and history to discover together.

    Crete

Best for outdoor adventures and history

Crete is undoubtedly among the best Greek islands to visit with your family – especially if you want to enjoy some exciting outdoor activities. Famous for its food and beautiful stretches of sand, it’s also where you’ll find Samaria Gorge National Park: the perfect place for a day hike.

If you’re interested in history, don’t miss the Archaeological Museum of Heraklion and the ancient ruins of Knossos. As for accommodation, Domes of Elounda is a top choice for families with children, featuring a playground, a games room and extensive kid-friendly activities.

    Corfu

Best for lovely landscapes and hidden coves

Corfu is a legendary destination for summer holidays, and arguably an even better one for shoulder-season family travel. Our travel designers recommend visiting outside of the peak months (July–August) and venturing beyond the most renowned destinations.

Head to the interior to find lush green landscapes or embark on a family-friendly boat trip to seek out secluded spots along the lengthy coastline. If you’re willing to get a bit off the beaten track, Corfu will surprise you with its abundance of nature and serene beauty.

    Rhodes

Best for cultural education and castles

The island of Rhodes boasts an intriguing blend of architectural marvels and natural scenery that will captivate kids and adults alike. There’s no shortage of cultural sites to visit, including the medieval Old Town and the imposing Palace of the Grand Master, complete with a moat.

Older family members may want to visit the island’s exceptional vineyards, while younger travellers can sample other local products like olive oil and honey. There are also plenty of family-friendly beaches and hiking spots, including the famous Valley of the Butterflies.

A word from our Europe specialists

I’d say Rhodes works best for families when you balance history with beach time. The island gives you such a lovely mix of medieval Old Town streets, ancient sites like Lindos and a vast coastline. Family-friendly beaches includes Tsambika, St Paul’s Bay and Faliraki.

    Paros

Best for relaxation and island hopping

Paros is a perfect choice for a relaxing family vacation in Greece. Here you can enjoy tranquil beaches, sleepy villages and quality time together without distractions. The waters are calm and warm – especially in September and early October – making it a great spot for younger kids.

Some of our favourite island hopping trips include Paros, which is conveniently located in the centre of the Cyclades. You can easily combine it with the lively atmosphere of Athens and the volcanic landscapes of Milos for a well-rounded family adventure through Greece.

    Santorini

Best for epic views and family activities

As one of the most legendary destinations in the Mediterranean, Santorini has a well-earned reputation among honeymooners. However, it’s also a delightful Greek island for families with sweeping panoramas, traditional windmills and cliffside villages that capture the imagination.

Our favourite family activities in Santorini include scuba diving, cooking workshops, e-bike tours, private cruises and sea kayaking. Stay at Andronis Arcadia for spacious villas with private pools, a phenomenal kids’ club and special spa treatments for the youngest guests.

    Costa Navarino

Best for multi-generational trips on the mainland

The Costa Navarino isn’t actually an island; it’s a stretch of coastline on the Peloponnese Peninsula. Even so, it’s well worth a mention thanks to its abundance of family-focused experiences, fascinating cultural sites and accommodation that’s ideal for multiple generations.

Here you can visit grand fortresses like the medieval Castle of Methoni; go kayaking or snorkelling off the coast; and stay at family-friendly luxury resorts like the Mandarin Oriental Costa Navarino, which has interconnecting suites, a kids’ club and family wellness experiences.

The best time to visit Greece’s islands with kids is during the warmer months from May to October. We suggest travelling during May, June, September or October to avoid the peak-season crowds of July and August, which can make family travel more complicated.

Crete, Corfu, Rhodes, Santorini and Paros all boast peaceful beaches and calm seas that are perfect to visit with kids. Paros is particularly well known for its relaxing, sandy shorelines where younger children can wade and swim.

Yes, island hopping is a wonderful activity for families in Greece. We can arrange bespoke tours that include the islands best suited to your family members’ ages and interests. Our team will ensure that all the logistical details are taken care of so you can sit back and enjoy the journey.
